So, who's the top female selling artist? You are both saying two different things.

I am pretty sure it’s IU

IU's latest album broke Taeyeon's first day record but I think Taeyeon still has the best selling album for female solos with My Voice (230k). IU's best selling album was Last Fantasy with 125k although I think her latest album has already surpassed that. Taeyeon's Purpose album looks like it might surpass My Voice's sales too though so I don't think we can really make a final judgement until we see their final numbers. I got these values from Wiki though so I'm not sure how reliable they are.

And I looked for their overall sales and it looks like at the moment they're pretty similar (Taeyeon around 700k and IU around 780k with IU's discography being more than double Taeyeon's) but I'm not sure if those numbers include their latest releases. Taeyeon has been the best selling female idol (physical) for like 4 years in a row even with IU as her competition for 3 out of those 4 so there's that as well.

So I think my original comment still stands. IU is the most popular Korean singer and her public recognition is unrivaled but Taeyeon is the most popular solo from a female group recognition wise + one of the strongest fandoms.

Actually IU's public image has bounced back a lot, I think she's mostly loved right now and not even seen as that controversial. Haven't seen hate comments towards her in ages ^^

I meant hypothetically. Like even if she got into a controversy, it wouldn't effect her music's chart rankings at all. Her public recognition is unrivalled. :)

IU was never a huge physical seller previously, although she dominates in digitals. Her Chinese fansite went all out and bulk ordered this time lol.

I think Hotel Del Luna did amazing in China so her Chinese fandom grew a lot thanks to her drama. Her international fandom overall grew heaps actually.

Yeah IU is everywhere which is what boosts her popularity even more than it already is. She's the most popular soloist, she's a popular actress, she has tons of endorsements, and now her international popularity is increasing too.

Taeyeon sold some 97K albums on the first day with her latest and was the highest for all female artists- soloist or group. And IU just recently broke the record lol.

Yeah first day sales aren't conclusive evidence of a better seller since there are instances of albums breaking 1st day sales but in the long run not breaking their best selling album as people just went all out on the 1st day to break the record.

Just to give an example for this Mamamoos Blue:s album sold 17k on its 1st day and ended up selling 50k, Red Moon sold 9k for it's 1st day which ended up selling 54k

Yep I was just thinking that although she has had controversies they haven't really stayed with her and impacted to her reputation unlike with GD who is someone who also tops the charts always when he releases sth, but his reputation is still pretty tarnished. IU's reputation is high as ever now and her past controversies are rarely mentioned and remembered ^^
