Why are all forums like this? (1 Viewer)

Kpopsource now has over 1500 members. But we only average 50 members logging in each day.

And don't get me wrong. 50 members is a good chunk of people. Especially in today's internet climate where forums in general have been on the decline ever since the rise of social media in the late 2000s. Where most discussions take place nowadays.

But this is the case on all forums. The daily member user base pales in comparison to how many total members each forum has.

So why do so many people create accounts and never come back?

Maybe they were viewing a forum as a guest and saw something so triggering they made an account just to reply to that one thing.

no idea how common this is, but i admit i did something like that once.
maybe for some users it's the exact opposite, they wanted to be active and all that but saw something which somehow scared them off and they no longer visit the site. or some people just prefer to lurk more than post, they visit the forum once a day, check out what's new without replying and that's all.

I actually made an OH account and made an introduction thread and everything but I haven't used it since.
For me it was just that it was difficult to integrate myself into there and there weren't as many things on there that interested me so I just never really had a desire to come back and Im sure many people can agree with that.
Plus the member count includes a lot of alts, banned people, test accounts, ect. So while there are a lot of unique people joining there are also a lot that can't or wont be active.

I have registered to many forums and have left each single one of them save for this one currently. We just loss interest and move on; sometimes at the very beginning, sometimes later. My AKP account is now an abandoned account.

Many people join but only the ones who actually get engaged with the forum come back each time and stay active. For a newcomer, seeing existing users already on good terms with each other and having their own circles, it might seem more daunting to fit in and connect too. They might make a few posts but not get invested enough to come back.

With Twitter and Reddit, most fans just end up there to discuss stuff, where everything is more impersonal and anyone can jump into any discussion more easily, but personally I've always preferred the more structured, organized layout of a good forum.

Btw, I always wonder how tough it is to get advertisements on a forum because of this same thing. You might have a huge userbase, but effectively your ads are being shown to the same group of people multiple times, the visibility is far lesser.

I did also slowly get into KPS cos of the cliques (to me) that were formed at akp n migrated here but I quickly found that everyone is really friendly here n welcoming even if you are new to them. Imagine my surprise when I said I was a lurker here n founder nim said I was quite active in response. I was shocked but maybe it's in comparison to the hundreds of accts here on KPS even less active than me, HaHa.

I've joined n lurked a few science fiction/fantasy literature forums since the mid(?)-2000s when they were really active but the activity level n as a working adult in different time zones dint get me as invested as KPS did. The westeros forum seemed really great before game of thrones tv series started.

I think KPSers r somewat more active on discord which my phone is too old to get the app. I hv a WhatsApp gc of SNSD I found thru reddit, it's quite active even if the group is dormant nowadays. I wish I could find other gc of Gfriend or BlackPink or twice or rv that weren't spamming ads all the time(I can't even find spamming gc so...but occasionally the SNSD gc has bots come in with spam, the rights holder is pretty quick to ban/delete them.)

TLDR: forums r so Oughts(2000s) but we (or maybe just I) Dinosaurs still like them. Wats ur SNS @DrewB ?

Wow, 90s forum. Dint know/realise Wheel of Time existed until early 2000s. I stumbled onto a paperback copy of A Game of Thrones in 1998(I think) at a book warehouse sale in Malaysia then. Years later I learned abt westeros.org n joined it but hardly participated there. The big thing was the brotherhood without banners who met up in real life at Martin signings n stuff but I always identified more with the night's watch. I joined a Donaldson Covenant forum n keep lurking there but it's quite inactive now. They had several meet ups with Donaldson himself in New Mexico I think called elohimfest, which I watched can videos of. I just never got into WoT for some reason altho I read almost entire Goodkind Sword of Truth until the side stories series of Nikki the enemy turned ally. I also went n read Feist almost entire Rift saga after stalling at original n Empire n the first sequel kings buccaneer. I spent almost a year long binge ard 2016/2017 borrowing from digital library every solo book until the last one. I've also read rothfuss n some Scott lynch.
But their forums if they exist seem daunting. I wonder why we r so drawn to kpop forums as compared to other obsessions. E.g. Movies, comics n other pop culture things like western music. I also joined/lurked western music solo forums like tori amos n Suzanne vega but those seemed quite boring after awhile.
I just prefer the vibe here n I love kpop differently from my other obsessions. Also every day seems to hv some news/updates tat is either interesting or anticipatory,
like the million threads of blackpinks next cb on akp end of last year.
Just my ramblings abt my obsessions, ignore me pls.

lol my og email address is an aol account with a Wot name(from when aol was dial up at like 9.6kbs or 14.4). Wot is OLD. my mom picked it up after i finished the belgariad while looking for gifts for me. She asked what was like the Eddings set(which i forced my family to know by reading them aloud on road trips )

I knew a site that had a million users. But only had 10,000 people once they got rid of the inactive accounts.
In saying, maybe they just come for the conversation on messengers or the perks, i.e. downloads etc.

I used to only hop to sites for a chat function and didn't really post, if at all.
K-Pop source is the only forum where I post often and not lurk due to not knowing what to say in a thread or just getting distracted.

Very few stick around for long term.

You get to know people and then they eventually move on to other life's pursuits. And then newcomers come and the cycle begins anew.

Yea i was on akp until they killed the discus chat. then i lurked for a few years until i signed up again.
Since i am older i am far more reluctant to sign up for stuff or give out info. updates to sites is usually enough hassle to have me never go back.
My entire sm presence is just for kpop. Except for FB which the girls signed me up for and i kinda keep track of a portion of my extended family.

In sense there is cliques here, but mm for me it feels more like one big KS clique where I just have closer friendships with some users

Even if there is some close friends, friend grousp and cliques, I think it's quite easy to hop into conversations which is nice ^^ I feel quite connected to people here, even if I'm not friends with everyone or rly into any cliques.. at least in my knowledge lol

There is definitely different eras in forums and people that come and go. It's sometimes sad, I miss some people that aren't around anymore. Both here and AKP.. and other non-kpop forums too. Online friendships can be fleeting.

I sometimes see some folks around in AKP that are familiar to me.. maybe cause I visit threads where such people hang around more xd, but it does seem like mostly new users. It feels weird, but also it has been like year now since I was active there- time flies! So no wonder lot of new people I guess.
