I feel like to each their own, but it is really annoying hearing that. Almost as if we're juveniles for liking 3rd/4th gen? Immature, really.

Your age has nothing to do with what gen you prefer or like more. There can be uncles stanning 4th gen groups and 10 year olds stanning 1st gen groups.
Let's just say: music is objective, thus so are the groups.

I personally feel like newer gens have more visuals, whereas older gens didn't care about having a full group of visuals.
2nd and 1st gen were better in variety, let's face it: 99% of the groups that appear today are bland and that's because you can't say anything or you're dragged. Newer gens care more about direct communication with their fans: you have a more personal relation with them
1st and 2nd was experimenting, 3rd and 4th is playing safe (hardly any group experiments and if they do, people hate it or it gets overdone by other groups).

Older and newer gens have both pro's and cons.
I love both and love and hate things from each gen.

The problem is because it was a long time ago everyone remembers the hits and the best ones while the ones not up to par were forgotten. In another 10 years the same will happen with 3rd gen.
