I think JYJ would be as big as TVXQ, maybe even bigger at start, SM was blocking them for reasons. Those three had huge loyal fandom and lot of talent to back it up. But I dont think JYJ exists anymore..

Which is why you promote to the public to get new fans.

And honestly, they all initially performed on par with their peers.
JYJ had some of the most popular members in TVXQ, still sold a lot and still toured well. They mainly had to use acting to stay in public eye bc SM has very little influence in that and still won popularity rewards (albeit snubbed with the delivery). The controversies only occured over the last few years and outside of Toilet boy, nothing career ending.

Jessica's debut was better than any other SNSD debut outside of Taeyeon. But the constant mediaplay from SM and not being able to promote in Korea or China fizzled her out.

All of them released music public friendly and similar to their counterparts. I feel like they would have reached similar levels

I think the jyj blocking is more of a myth.
Mnet and SM were full on at war for that period no way they had sway with them or the parent company.
