However, recently, with groups like Fromis_9 or (G)I-DLE or even nugu group, Favorite I've noticed that their companies didn't really opt to have those "big vocal" mains like Yuju, Wendy or Solar. They prefer to go the "unique tone" route and I gotta say, it kinda works? So far, from the big GGs, the only ones who retain these massive notes in their title songs is GF and Mamamoo.
All the survival shows i have seen except China and S1(but that was not super deep either) have had tiny pools of strong main vocals, and most of those were good at only 1 thing like say Yuri/ Goeun who were never good enough to do the job alone.
I could not make it thru more than the first 2 eps of idol school but it did not look good from what i remember with Natty being the vocal star, a kid known for dancing. Herin had seemed to loose her confidence.

idle is a rap/ gc group and typically they have all had week vocals.

These unique tone kids can do 1 thing and while it works they will be good ( although i seem to remember a guy telling Soyeon to sing)

Maybe the market has changed but it may just be that there are not enough power songs being written that connect with people.

This is a good argument. A lot of the idol songs being written right now seem to not need powerful vocals to really get the message across.

I mean when you have an instrumental chorus or just uttering a few phrases in the chorus you don't necessarily need them.

When talking about powerful gg main vocalists, I think of a very small group of singers like JeA, Hyolyn, Kim Bohyung and Kim Boa, Solji, Uji and Solar. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few and there are others that may not come across as powerful because of the kinds of songs and arrangements they're given, but the point is, that's not a whole lot of vocalists compared with how many groups have been around in any generation. I think it's something that has always just been nice to have unless you're specifically trying to make a vocal group. Skilled main vocals are hard enough to find, ones with powerful voices even harder, and then throw in the need to dance at least a little as well as fit the idol look, and I don't think it's practical for groups of any time period to have required this kind of singer, nor have fans ever really demanded it. If you write songs and distribute lines in ways that play to the strengths of whoever you have to work with and at least some of the talent is competent, you're fine. It's pop music. No one cares that much about vocal quality unless they want to drag another group or Momoland starts laughing.

as long as they aren't terrible at singing and sound good then no. tbh there are a lot of singers who aren't "technically good" but still sound good in songs can sing live. I mean I dont even think this is with just kpop, look at one direction, none of them were power vocalists (except zayn and even that's a stretch) and they were the biggest boy group in the world.
