I think everyone has some sort of trope that they are not a fan of at all.
So what is yours?
And is there a possible way it could be executed in a fashion where you would enjoy it?

For me, personally, one of the topes I absolutely LOATHE is the childhood friends to lovers trope.
I don't know what it is about that trope but I legit cannot stand it.
I find it also is so unrealistic anytime I read it.
I think the only time I MAY enjoy it is if we actually get to grow up with the characters and see their friendship grow into love.
But in most books I've read that isn't how it happens and YUCK.

Idk if this counts but I kinda don’t like “the chosen one” trope. It won’t ruin a book for me, but I think I prefer it when a character chooses to do something not because they were chosen to do so but because of their own motivations.

I get that-I think that applies to the Hunger Games (I'm reading that series right now) where Katniss isn't necessarily special and isn't trying to start shit but it happens anyway and she's at the head of it without being particularly special or chosen. Even though this book also has the trope I loathe in it.

I actually love the Hunger Games though, it was a great series. I personally don’t see Katniss as a chosen one as much because she was the one who chose to volunteer in place of her sister. And I think that scene showed us a lot about her as a person and how much she cares about her family then if she was just randomly chosen to participate. She’s definitely got her faults as well but I think that’s what makes her a good protagonist.

As for the romance, I don’t think it’s the best part of the book tbh, since there’s a lot more going on. I think people either love it or hate it depending on how invested you are in the characters. But overall I really enjoyed the series, it’s definitely become one of my favorites after I’ve reread it.

Yeah, I think that's what I meant? That Katniss isn't the chosen one but her actions still spark a movement in a way. I'm definitely not in LOVE with the series so far but I am enjoying it nonetheless.

Oh ok I get what you mean. Yeah I personally love the series because it was one of those books were I was really invested the whole way through, and I felt like it wasn’t just entertaining but was also somewhat relevant to our society today in many ways. I don’t really wanna spoil anything that happens in the books to you, but especially book three I felt it was really realistic in the sense that it showed us how some people suffered due to the consequences of the people in power. The characters were also really good to me because no one was 100% good or evil and they all had their own motivations. But anyway. I guess you’ll just have to see for yourself if you like it or not :)

A movie trope i side-eye a lot almost loathe it is character development through dialogue/speech.

I think it began/got popularised/widespread when/after Robert McKee' 'Story' got famous, he taught screenwriting.

B4 it wasnt prevalent but now its a shortcut to show how a character developed/develops their personality.

Frex, in Clarice , a tv follow up to 'Silence of the Lambs', practically everything we know n learn about the title character is through her speaking about her childhood n flashbacks.

In the movie, at least we had Jodie Foster n Anthony Hopkins chewing the scenery to enjoy their back n forth banter/psychological warfare through dialogue. But in this tv series its tiresome(to me) as its a sign of laziness/lack of creativity of how to showcase Clarice's personality/strengths. It also seems to be a way to reinforce how little movie Clarice grew from her battles n victories there, n regresses into a shut in shadow of her movie self.

Tat i keep watching is maybe a testament to how much Jodie Foster imbued into the character of Clarice persisting, despite other portrayals like in Hannibal movie n this series. (Turned into a critique instead of just a takedown of a trope i dislike in this show.)

i feel like a broken record because this is my 3rd or 4th time writing a whole essay on why i hate this trope but i enjoy typing it out every single time even though it's something filled with negativity. so there is this specific trope in some movies (maybe books too but i can't say because i don't read often) which are supposed to be "emotional" where the story centers around a young character, usually a woman, who has some kind of a terminal illness and it becomes the only thing that defines her until a point where she meets a man, they fall in love, and now the sick character becomes some kind of "inspiration" for that man to live his life to the fullest because she will no longer have a chance to do it herself. what makes it even worse is that in stories using this trope you usually see the character's illness potrayed as something beautiful, meaningful, inspiring rather than painful and exhausting especially at a young age. the lack of depth these characters have also makes it look that the only reason behind sick people's existence is becoming some source of an inspiration to people who are perfectly healthy and don't have to go through the same things. the movie which is a good example of my most-hated trope is my least favourite movie of all time which is the fault in our stars. to this day i want to get back the 2 hours i wasted on watching this. there are many k-dramas with this trope as well and i'm sick of it no pun intended.

O.o shit I don't think I've read books like this where it's the illness that made the character inspirational...thankfully I've never watched The Fault in our Stars but I get what you mean.

this movie is definitely not worth your time, it's truly awful. not just for this trope actually everything about that movie feels like it was written by a 12 year old :wimwim:

I actually love cliches. So so so much. If they're executed right, they're perfect. They're cliches for a reason :shamesica:

I hate hate hate the "aggressive alpha" guy w the innocent childlike girl. These stories always seem to push the idea that aggressive = attractive and I assure you, if a guy pinned me to a wall and did that weird k-drama thing I would absolutely call the cops.

Villains are great and I'm whipped for them but some of these guys are straight up abusive. And the girl is always portrayed to be really child like, especially in anime. It's like a way to explore pedophilia without raising any flags and it's disgusting.

And these women that are portrayed to be really baby-ish are also usually really curvy which is really concerning considering that those are drawn.

I can agree with the pedophile mention because I hate the infantilization of female protaganists.
