I still do not get why the fans of the founding teams of the super league were pissed. (1 Viewer)

Is this European football? I got confused cos you posted in games n technology instead of world sports.

I dint follow the formation n collapse of Super League. But its been rumbling for yrs since 90s or earlier/later. Its probably cos of national/FIFA interests tat it hasnt worked out yet.

But the money n gains to Europes top teams seems like it'll happen sooner or later. Too much involved not to be revived. I think.

Watch these videos and you'll understand why there was so much backlash to the European Super League proposal.

An exclusive league for these so called 'elite clubs' absolutely goes against the history of English football.

Could you explain the English/Barclays Premier League, then? (I hvnt watched/followed much since i was younger then. Nottingham Forest used to be my team i supported/liked then. I think cos they won the then European Championship(i was a success stan, but i dint realise tat then). No other team caught my attention/support/liking. My brothers are respectively, Man Utd n Arsenal in their dna through n through, for life.

They were not leaving the premier league thought right?
They wanted to kill Fifa and the champ league.

not like fifa deserves to live this world cup proves that.

They would diminish n deprioritise champs league n world cup. Imagine NBA/MLB just having a top 10 teams league instead of Super Bowl/World series. So NY Yanks, New England Pats in their respective leagues every year would face the same top teams every yr.

In US sports cos of geography n the league/commisioner n maybe salary cap, its more evenly balanced/thetes a chance for other teams. But in European football, seemingly same ole teams like Man U, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich n Barcelona plus Man City n other rich teams dominate with some yrs Porto, or other teams rising by a fluke/happenstance/good manager/players tat yr but nvr realistically being consistent enuf to last more than a few yrs(it seems to me).

Same as the Yankees, Lakers n Pats/Giants/Packers(?) seeming to dominate/win stretches at a time. Idk US sportd tat well.nut tats my undetstanding.

The issue that fans, players, retired players and others had about the proposed ESL, was that it was going to be an exclusive league for these so called elite clubs.
The English and European leagues has always had a promotion/relegation format, and entry to competitions such as the Champions League and the Europa League were always based on performance and not because you deemed yourself to be 'the best'...
More than 10 years ago, the team I support had the chance of playing AC Milan at home in one of these competitions. My team aren't a very big club, but they won the Fa Cup and were rewarded with getting to play against a team as big as AC Milan.

However, if this ESL existed at that time, my team wouldn't of had the opportunity of playing against AC Milan.
And this is what outraged everyone. Football fans, regardless of the size of their club, dreams of playing against the big clubs in these competitions. And this ESL was spitting all over those dreams. Dreams that made football into the sport that it is today.

I get that if your say a Sheffield united fan. but if you are a man city fan instead to getting drawn to pools with 3 other pretty lame teams.
you get to see em play barca, real inter bryern heads up and if they make the play offs it will be crazy.

although with as much money and stuff as they had the roll out was unbelievably awful.
if they were going to do it drop the 15 names and the 5 year adds all together

ofc i would not want to see it become what American sports are now (basically just an excuse for fantasy games)

but it seemed a solid idea for a product they want to market world wide.

i guess they are upset about process, in practice how often do the 'super teams ' especially the European monsters not qualify?
If early reports were right teams like the Leicester City from a few years back and now would still be good.

i guess the prem league is more volatile than the others. and there is a long history of assorted cups some of which would get squeezed out but the extra games the ESL were planning.

and i get why players were mad it pretty much made those 15 clubs the ones you had to be on to be someone.

They were doing it purely for money, which is a bit ironic because I’m sure fifa could allocate a good amount of money to the champions league yet they refuse to too because of money.
