    after reading your rant i realised something - kpop's becoming more and more unserious, but that does not necessarily mean fun. "unserious" is a carefully crafted and curated image (like your average kpop concept). but is anyone genuinely going all out and making something we'd all enjoy wholeheartedly?

    you're right that ultimately, the usage of queer art (like drag) is a decision by a corporate body, for that corporate body's profit alone, and it's not representative of that company's stance. that said, i do appreciate that the artists end up getting paid and that they also gain visibility.

    but then again, nana's inclusion in the form mv was different. this was vanner's broke as hell era, released during the pandemic. the group and the company knew they had to make a comeback, but because of the pandemic, their tiny-ass company had no money. so the vanner members relied on themselves and their personal contacts to get the song out. member gon (my bias btw) wrote the song with his brother, a professional songwriter. gon also choreographed it, as he was a professional choreographer before becoming an idol (another wild story). then, they wanted an extra actor in the music video... and leader taehwan decided to call in his old acquaintance, who happened to be nana youngrong kim! imagine just casually being acquaintances with one of the country's leading drag artists lmao. so they got her to star, which she happily agreed to do for the low, low fee of a meal (yes, vanner were so broke they couldn't pay her in cash, they could only treat her to a meal)!

    Vanner remind me of the American dream, a miracle that only they could achieve. I really hope they're in a financially and mentally safer place after winning that show, they do deserve it. I hope Nana is doing alright too.

    No, no one is going all out and making something we'd all enjoy, everyone is under like irony and nonchalance nowadays that it's so hard to argue for something more when with me for example I've been said I care too much, but it's like, someone has to! Someone has to be like 'actually this could be better.' The challenge nowadays is finding where we can find those places. Obviously not every release will be unserious but I've been seeing it in western music. We're so fucked.

    i agree with you so much. chalance is sorely needed in general, all around us. we need to wake the fuck up and incorporate some levels of chalance in our lives. this is highkey why i love my uni friend group - they're so vocally anti-nonchalance, it's so refreshing!

    Agreed about Hot Blue Shoes, I think the beat of that goes crazy. Overall I didn't mind the mini but I wanna see them build on this direction more. and YES to basing more songs off hey hey!

    I unfortunately don't keep up with dearalice. I wish their team were doing more to promote them online but they seem to have been forgotten. They weren't even given a chance! I'm someone who doesn't like the idea of western/'global' idols but I was rooting for dearalice to do somewhat well since I don't want hybe to monopolise anymore than they been doing lol but it seems like there's no good opposition right now. It's very much a shame. Ariana was alright and they're good dancers though! If you're into dearalice I suggest looking into Full circle boys and their songs 'm80' and 'call my name,' the MVs specifically are amazing. They are GREAT dancers and I'm hoping they find a footing in the western mainstream.

    I fucking love Illit rn. Bomb is not only good but really consistent, do the dance is one of my top picks for soty this year (as an aside: I know you're not active on here BUT i am holding a soty and b-side tournament bracket if you wanna participate). I'm pretty sure they're coming back in a few weeks so fingers crossed it holds up.

    I'm pretty sure I heard one of Rewind's songs because Nick spolighted him. I don't think I was that taken with them when I heard their debut on music bank (I watch regularly to keep up lmao) but I'll take a look at it now, you had me at backstreet boys.

    LMAO. I'm very glad jellyfish hasn't given up yet. i haven't heard the track and I'll probably wait until the official release, but I am also pretty hyped. I've been on a real nostalgic trip because onf came down under for a free concert and I got to go, I've been a fan for five years and have known them for seven. Now verivery's coming back, hello!? Is it 2020 again!? I'm excited to see what the members can do in the studio too (it'll be interesting since we have had recent examples of self-producing groups reminding us that just because the members produce the songs doesn't mean it'll be a good song COUGH COUGH CORTIS COUGH COUGH), I wonder what their approach will be.

    IKR! Although DTD and Jellyous are by far my faves of the mini. I don't like the more subdued gg music on the whole but they do it so well!

    Do you know KIIRAS? What's your opinion on them? I LOVEDDDD Kill Ma Boss (even though I have no clue wtf it means) and I like their new song quite well even if I think it could use some more pop when it comes to the chorus.

    What did you think? I don't think their debut (Forever) is their best song--I think their predebut Re:Set is their best by far. I LOOOOOVE it and I think it's one of my top listened songs of all time in my iTunes library.

    Good music is coming back!! :D At least we hope. I also REALLY don't like Cortis's music. It's so grating and annoying! It's trying to be so much more than it is or can or should be. It's so... annoying 14 year old boy.

    What do you think of the teasers for VRVR (if you've been keeping up with them?) I love the teaser photos so far! Apparently it's going to be their "most intense" concept so far, whatever that means. But I'm sure it's going to be amazing. And VRVR have a really good track record of self-produced music so I have confidence in them.

    Any other new releases of note for you? None for me that I can think of.

    Illit are definitely promising. I didn't like their debut year as much but if they keep going in this direction they'll definitely achieve a lot of at least critical success from our circles!

    Kill Ma Boss wasn't the best debut I've heard BUT I loved the idea of fun country, I was hoping they would've doubled down and expand on their country sound but I don't mind bang bang either! I watch music bank regularly and their performance last friday was pretty good. I haven't listened to any b-side of theirs but I don't usually for rookies unless they immediately catch my eyes (close your eyes for example do, I'm pretty sure the word for it is contemporary, rnb well in an industry that's notorious for fucking up black-developed genres), but if they keep going down in this direction I'll probably listen to their albums. Overall I think ggs have been better this year than last year though I know a lot of people will doubt me with that.

    I haven't returned to them as much as I thought I would but I rmember liking re:set a lot as well. Forever I think wasn't for me but anything synthy I'll always be a fan of. Music aside too I love trios in k-pop so thank god they exist lmao.

    RANT INCOMING:
    Yeah I've come to the conclusion that I love the acts that embrace K-pop rather than the groups that go like 'actually, we're more than k-pop, we blah blah blah blah blah...' like, as a genre K-pop is creatively bankrupted and naturally limiting in terms of musical innovation and that's okay, groups can still innovate by acknowledging the fact that it's kpop the songs just gotta have great production and great execution. And I have a bone to pick with any act who wanna twist the formula cause they're not twisting any formula by being in an exploitative company who see the idols as IPs rather than performers and artists. It's like Yeonjun right, he resigned with a company who we know is not only unethical (like every other company) but has been in the spotlight for scooter braun and israeli stocks and shit and it's like he's trying to be alternative? It pisses me the fuck off.
    Sorry about the rant lmao TLDR Cortis would be better if they weren't kpop idols to begin with.

    Imma be honest i dont keep up with photo teasers ever like I even forget Cravity uploads them lmao. I just looked them up on insta and I see the vision. Werid seeing Kangmin so grown up when to me he was always a seventeen year old. Gyehyeon is defs the highlight. I'll make sure when the highlight medley comes out I'll give you my thoughts. Also since we talk a lot I can give you my discord if you're more active on there? I'm not that active but I will be for you.

    I'll make my recs concise and bullet-listed cause I got a few:
    - Hearts2hearts have been having a solid debut year (is it as other sm groups? I'd argue not but they're still good) and Focus has been my fave single to come out from them so far. The b-sides are alright, it's rnb, but I think they shine in their more dancepop-oriented tracks.
    - Blue Valentine had to grow on me but when it grew it GREW. There's a reason why people glaze them so much. Album is also quite solid, Nick was right to put reality hurts as the buried treasure it goes absolutely CRAZY. I saw them live for a free 30 min set along with onf (!!! huge cause I got to use my onf lightstick!) and they were great, their mics were off for their first two songs though and when lily asked the crowd if they could hear them the crowd just gaslighted them like girl TELL THE TRUTH! Anyways yeah Blue Valentine great song.
    - I gotta glaze Cravity man Lemonade Fever is just Boom Boom Bass by Riize but better and expanded upon like yes this is how funk pop should be done!
    - New close your eyes is also solid, obviously not all my poetry but still pretty good.
    - Uhhh shit what else?
    - OH AHOF MAN!!! Their albums don't hit yet but Pinocchio sure does! Better chorus than rendezvous imo, it feels revised and improved upon and they sounded great in their music bank encore when they won I'm so happy for them

    OK on the girl group side of things have you listened to H2H's Style? It reminds me of a lot of the things we both like in boy group music and is maybe my song of the summer so far. If you've listened to it what do you think?

    BTW, have you heard of Waker? I picked up their latest mini recently (Sweet Tape) and I really liked it! That's my cute bg song rec of the week LOL.

    I guess so, but it still doesn't sit right with me. And at least with The Wind they have most of the members still active whereas VRVR only have two.

    Kangmin is going to do really well I think, apparently some k-nets have already congratulated him on his debut LOL. But I almost feel like Jelpi shot themselves in the foot, especially with the two-year-hiatus thing since VRVR had a lot of good momentum in 2022 going into 2023. and 4Veri could've easily done a comeback or a subunit thing with just the four of them, I feel like it was a really nice and balanced lineup.

    At this point I think my main hope is maybe since contract negotiations are next year they could all leave and go somewhere else as a group? I wonder if any companies would want to take them though. But they do have a pretty good fanbase, albeit half of it is dormant, and I feel like I've heard of other smaller boygroups changing agency together.

    Yeah it's just not looking good for them is it? I think I'm thinking of bp2 in a salvaging, because I can't see Jellyfish continuing on with vrvr unfortunately, I'm being realistic here.

    Why did they go on hiatus anyways? Through 2020-2022 as you said they had good momentum and they were very much a good (lower) mid-tier group in my eyes.

    I said the same thing for Golden Child but they've quietly disbanded, end of an era for me. We'll see but if other groups have moved over with even bigger fanbases and more on the line (the boyz, namely) then verivery could do it, it always comes down to if they wanna do it though

    It was kind of just a combination of things, Minchan went back on hiatus December 2022, Dongheon went on his military enlistment in June-ish of 2023 and a month or two later Hoyoung went on hiatus. We haven't heard almost anything about Minchan since his second hiatus, except that sometimes he checks the fancafé and I believe a couple times the other members have mentioned meeting up with him. When Dongheon had his first break from the military they uploaded pictures with him and the active members as well as Hoyoung to their SNS but since then we've heard nothing. During the enlistment period the members mostly focused on solo activites then, naturally I suppose, although they did go on a US fan tour in summer of last year. And at the time the members seemed to believe they'd be releasing more music--I remember Yongseung stating in an interview that "one thing is certain--we will continue our musical journey by releasing new albums". Which is the kind of stuff that makes me hope they could go to another agency but I digress. Yeonho had a musical, Yongseung had a play and a web drama, and Kangmin had a web drama and I want to say another acting role? Or maybe Yongseung had another one and I'm mistaken. Gyehyeon didn't do anything during the hiatus though. My delusional self thought he must've been preparing for a solo debut but I guess not. Probably the most worrying moment was when they announced that they were terminating their Weverse service--I think a lot of us thought it was over then. But then they immediately announced they were just transitioning to another service, which is b.stage. Anyways, after Dongheon came back their SNS got more active and they even opened a new round of fanclub membership at the end of April/beginning of May with a new photoshoot and everything, which made a lot of us in a Discord server I'm in cautiously optimistic that new things were coming. And then we got slapped in the face with the B2P announcement.

    Honestly, I just hope that even if they do disband at least one member makes a solo debut or something. I love so much of VRVR but especially the music because I'm much more of a music person compared to dramas, etc., and I can't imagine never having new music from any of them again. They do have a couple of OST songs they released last year that I'm saving in my back pocket just in case they don't release any more music so I can have something new for down the line :irenecrazy:

    We were really relatively optimistic that the hiatus was temporary last year too, they did a self-produced Christmas song as recently as December and did two OST songs for Ellsworld in the summer (they had previously done an OST song for that game in 2020).

    Anyways this all is driving me insane. I got distracted from my classwork (summer class EW) for like an hour or two today just feeling depressed about all this. They're my ult of ults, the group that got me into K-pop, and they had so much potential. I thought we'd at least have until next year but maybe not. I just don't know whether the lingering possibility is worse or if a flat-out disbandment would be worse. This sucks so much I'm actually tearing up rn:cri:

    Hey happy belated birthday?? Long time no chat! I've been uber busy with school so I haven't been on here lately >_<

    What did you think of ZB1's latest comeback? I haven't bought the b-sides yet but I adore the TT! It's on some of my playlists now and I love listening to it when I'm walking from my classes back to my dorm if it's a nice day out, and TBH kinda acting like I'm in a music video. People probably think I'm insane but y'know that happens to all the cool people :lucastwerk:

    And TWS's upcoming comeback? I'm super excited! The concept and teasers I've seen so far are really promising, a nice continuation of their concept methinks. It's giving vibes like it'll be a really good album overall too! Probably my favourite overall, although Hey Hey will probably stay my fave song of theirs. I'm pretty sure I already gave it a place on my top 20 playlist. I mnea, that song is basically perfect!

    And I think you turned out to be pretty right about Last Festival in the end, but it's def a grower <3

    Meanwhile, how have you been otherwise? Any other comebacks you've been following? I think Verivery miiiight have a comeback before long? I'm really excited for that possibility!

    Definitely. Countdown is really pleasant but kind of a retread. Also every time I listen it bugs me that they say "1, 2, 3, countdown" when isn't that counting up and not counting down? It would've been just as easy to say "3, 2, 1, countdown".

    Idk if you'll fully enjoy it but there's so much to appreciate about the music and art direction. It's that type of rnb that doesn't make you snooze, a lot of krnb for me can be too coffeehouse but cye's collection is quite good to listen to.

Our Story
KpopSource began as a small blog called ksource, created by a dedicated K-Pop fan known as @Sourcekeeper. Frustrated by the decline of welcoming, discussion-driven communities, she set out to build something different — a space where fans could talk, connect, and stay for the long term.

Over time, that simple idea grew into the community you see today. While platforms and trends have changed, the goal has remained the same: to give K-Pop fans a place that feels familiar, human, and worth returning to.
