BTS Will Premiere New Song, Tour NYC on ‘Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’

BTS will appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 24th for a special telecast. The seven-piece group will do an extended interview with Fallon and a performance of a brand-new song, as well as take a tour of New York landmarks with the late-night host.

“We wanted to do something special for BTS and, at the same time, celebrate New York City,” Fallon said in a release. “BTS really knocked it out of the park. You’re not going to believe how big and fun their performance is — they took over Grand Central Terminal.”

The episode will feature Fallon interviewing the BTS members on the subway, asking fan questions that were previously sent in on February 6th. (Following the Tonight Show‘s call for submissions, #FallonAsksBTS trended at number one worldwide on Twitter.) They’ll also take a trip to New York’s iconic restaurant Katz’s Delicatessen.

Tonight Show showrunner Gavin Purcell told Rolling Stone that this will be one of the most high-production episodes that the show has ever put out: “In terms of the production side, this [episode] was a pretty heavy lift. I can’t tell you how many people went into the making of this — it was the entire staff rallying together to make this really cool show. And on the BTS side, it was amazing to see how they rallied and how hard they worked. That’s something their fans know, but not only are they incredibly talented, they’re also so hardworking and humble.”

For those of you who have canceled DKDKTV....sorry :irenecrazy:
But I liked some of the things they said so I wanna share it here.

Re: "ON"
RM revealed that they tried to flip the song -- N-O, No -- and they liked the ring of it and described ON as a big diary for their past 7 years, a shrink version of the whole BTS identity -- that they can stumble from time to time, but they got back up. And it has the meaning similar to "on-air" or "bring it on," as in their lyrics. And he called it a declaration that they have admitted their destiny.
David Kim

Re: Identity
So also quoting RM from an interview with Variety ... RM said that they aimed high but they never knew they'd get this big themselves too and then one day they just woke up and they were like, "Where are we? Who are we?" and they had this identity crisis. And then they realized the best way, when you don't know where to go, is to walk down the road you've been walking on before -- like their past. So he called it rebooting, reflecting and figuring out themselves again.

Re: K-Pop / "BTS-Pop"
Original Statements
The music we want to do is music where the genre is BTS. A new genre.
Suga - It is now beginning more meaningless to divide genres. Rather than K-Pop being spotlighted as just a genre as a whole, I wish more talented Korean artists can become well-known to the world. It's truly amazing that so many talented people come from this small country.
TL;DR -- It's stupid/meaningless to question whether BTS is K-Pop or not and that the real problem is stigmatizing K-Pop as if it's something inferior.
Danny Kim
  • Suga isn't questioning whether BTS is kpop or not, but speaking on how many idol groups are just lumped into K-Pop. Acknowledges that k-pop can be "a musical genre" (inclusive of the industry, the culture surrounding it, and some other production elements), but states that Suga is saying that all groups shouldn't just be lumped into one group like, "Oh, that's k-pop."
  • BTS doesn't deny they're from Korea or that they're K-Pop -- they're proud of being from Korea, proud of making it as K-Pop artists. They've carved their way into their own type of music, genre, but they're still K-Pop. [...] BTS is different from a lot of k-pop idol music, but it still has a lot of the same elements. "They're still making pop music in Korean."
David Kim
  • Their more recent songs have fewer traits of traditional K-pop (says their song On is "totally pop-ish"). Says what is "K-pop" about it is that they're Korean, the Korean lyrics, the synchronized dancing. Gives image of a Venn diagram -- BTS has it's own circle, K-pop it's own circle, and there's an intersection between the two.
  • No one can argue that BTS hasn't grown out of k-pop in terms of size or diversity of fandom and musical style, There's nothing wrong with being labelled K-pop. There's nothing to be ashamed of re: being labelled K-Pop and if there is a problem, it'll be the group of people who are stigmatizing k-pop and the people who are reinforcing that stigma by saying that it's embarrassing or something inferior to BTS.
  • Personal interpretation of Suga's message: "It doesn't matter. Music is music. And BTS has their own music." States that when RM talks about their music and achievements, he often refers to it in general as K-pop.
They plan on doing an explanation video for UGH!
