Honestly not impressed by this as an American (and an Asian-American). They should meet with an Asian American celeb instead. We have our first Asian-American vice president and it isn't meaning much

yeah. But Asian-Americans in general have barely any attention here, and we barely have any Asian-American celebs. And instead of having them speak out, giving them attention, he's just inviting BTS from an Asian country which doesn't even address the Asian hate crimes happening here in the US. It seems like just a clout chase with BTS being the biggest bg rn, and not genuine concern about Asian-Americans, who are his actual citizens. And here in America, for all Asians, we have barely any representation in movies and tv.

I also hope having a vice-president who is part Asian would help us Asian-Americans, with representation, and speaking up.

And when we do appear, it's usually either a stereotype. Asian who's really smart and that's basically it. Or Asian who isn't good at math and is a disappointment to their family and all Asians

Not to mention, being Asian is like their whole personality, like when there's an Asian American main character it's just like they're Chinese American and all this, they're Indian American and all this, they're Japanese American and all this, Korean American and all this, etc.

I would like to see Asian-Americans being represented as normal people, just anyone, and their culture and heritage being a part of them but not everything about them

Exactly. BTS don't even have the Asian-American experience. We barely have any people that could speak for us and even they aren't given a chance in favor of this attention seeking clout chasing.

yes unfortunately Asian representation in the American media is full of stereotypes. probably nothing substantial is gonna come out of this meeting....it is mostly a chance for BTS and the president to meet. Hopefully there would more events that can make a difference with growing Asian-american issues....but it all starts with the people & their perspective on Asian-americans which won't change overnight.

It still is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, and no one in bts is Asian American, and they do not have the Asian American experience. They even live in a homogenous country. So the president shouldn’t have invited them on the 31st over an Asian American celeb. If bts met with joe Biden for some other reason on some other occasion and discussed the racism they faced from overseas, that would’ve been fine. But I still think having bts at the White House for aapi month is just a clout chase, and shows the president doesn’t care about Asian Americans or their voices.

The president and his team could have made a short video featuring asian and pacific islander celebrities, both asian americans and around the world, and bts could have participated. They could have supported other asians, given a short message about being proud to be asian, and how asians are great, tell asian americans to have confidence in themselves. Maybe sharing a little bit about their culture. Like BTS could say proud to be korean or smth. And we could have different asian countries featured, and celebs who have roots there could say the name of their country, or "proud to be from ____", maybe featuring some part of their culture, clothing, food, etc. as well in their video segment.

I think it would be a cute and sweet idea, and if BTS wanted to help for AAPI month, it would be great. It would help so many Asian American children who feel insecure about their culture being mocked, their "exotic names", their food, their outfits and traditions, asian stereotypes, and being "smart bc they're asian" while discounting their hard work, and just being a poc, not being seen as a "typical" or "normal" American, and more. And let them know they're not alone, they can be proud to be asian, they have nothing to be ashamed of, etc.

Maybe the video could even half an intro by the vice president, who is actually half asian.

i really like your idea; i see a future White House staffer i'm new here so won't reveal my background just yet... totally agree with your sentiment about Asian americans growing up with stereotypes and their hard work getting dismissed. It would be great to show more Asian-american celebs/role models who have positive influence on the kids and can relate to growing up in America. Being a minority, and unlike other minorities, there's no policy in place to help out. even for college admissions, it helps out other minorities with any admissions that have race as a factor, but hurts Asian americans who work hard to get in. not putting down other minorities, but for the sake of asian-americans, admissions should be merit based imo. i think i'm going off topic with this tho

College admissions and race is another frustration i completely understand. Who knows how long itll take for poc to be seen on equal ground as everyone else in the states. This school accepting this percentage of this ethnicity and this percentage of that race, and it's just never-ending. This topic is never-ending. All we ask is to be seen as the same. No one wants to be asked, "What are you?" HUMAN!!!!!! Look at us for our work ethic, our skills, our knowledge.

But yes, yes, yes! It’s not just pure natural smartness, Asian parents are strict and Asian cultures place huge value on discipline. The non Asian kids who were very disciplined were just as smart or smarter than the Asian kids, it’s just there weren’t many at my school.

Asian American role models and positive influences are so needed. Something like that would have been so helpful to me in elementary school. And most celebs we see, models in magazines, character in movies, tv and books barely being Asian and ones we can look up to. Even Asian authors writing books with Caucasian leads because that’s what most people read. The first time I actually read a book written by an Asian American author and with an Asian American protagonist was in fifth grade, and my first thought was actually why she chose to have an Asian American protagonist was it was weird, it was so new to me🙈 but it was a good book and I still remember it bc of that.

Yeah college admissions really handicap Asian Americans because of the diversity component where they only want a certain percentage of each minority in the accepted class, and so many have great scores bc of discipline.
