I knew it was pricey to renounce a US citizenship, but I didn't know it was currently so pricey compared to other countries. For the US it costs $2,350 to renounce your citizenship. The UK is also considered pricey to renounce your citizenship, and its not exactly pennies ($569). And then there's nations where its like $25. But I haven't seen any other countries where its quite as expensive as the US Apparently they may lower it to $450 though, but I don't think that's settled for sure yet.

On the other hand, if you live abroad and are a citizen, you pay taxes that you otherwise wouldn't need to pay if you weren't a citizen. So either way your money is going bye bye In the grand scheme of things, you could save more that $2,350, if you have that kind of disposable income to renounce your citizenship.
And ofc if you live abroad and have another citizenship, certain jobs will be unavailable to you. Granted most will be, but not all.

If you naturalized to a Russian citizenship you would have to revoke your US one before you’re eligible for the Russian one or have to renounce the Americanone within a certain time frame, but I don’t think that means you can skip the US fee. I believe you have to go through the process to revoke your American one yourself, so either way same process as if you wanted to revoke an American one in other ways. I’m not 100% positive about that but I’m almost positive.

I looked into it and that’s outdated apparently, Russia no longer requires a naturalized citizen to renounce their previous citizenships anyways. So I see no way in which getting a Russian citizenship would mean that your American one is removed, as neither the US nor Russia place any restrictions on you holding another citizenship simply on the basis of having the other citizenship.

I just used Russia as an example but maybe China since China doesn't allow one to hold dual citizenships

In cases like that I think it would likely go the way I originally said, where the cost and burden of renouncing your prior citizenships are on you anyways. Don’t know for sure but I see no reason why it would work otherwise.

but that's on the US side right? like how do they enforce it?

like let's say I currently hold a US passport and I go get a Chinese one (assuming I meet all the requirements) and they agree doesn't that lead to me losing out on my US citizenship automatically?

i don’t think China would accept your application if you don’t prove you’re renouncing your previous citizenships. So you can’t get your their agreement to give you a Chinese citizenship without doing the US paperwork prior to that. China doesn’t have any control over the US citizenship portion anyways, so in this theoretical scenario the person would be a dual citizen and China can’t do anything about it except revoke the Chinese one. No matter what, they can’t take away your US citizenship, and the US would have no obligation to take away your US one because it’s not their law.
