I know I’m probably late with this thread but I notice twitter is literally dragging Sunmi for saying what she said but do you agree with her saying BTS paves the way and not Wonder girls?

Yes, I 100% agree.
We had kpop groups going worldwide before, even releasing full english songs, but no one was so successful, especially with korean songs. Nowadays, there are a lot of kpop fans even in my country. Back in 2011 I barely had 1-2 kpop fans friends irl. Ofc every group had its contribution, but BTS had a huge impact

I think both interviewer and her are right. Wonder Girls and BTS both paved way for other kpop artists. BTS of course had lot more impact, but groundwork for kpop in western world was made by 2gen groups like WG. And for Sunmi as solo artist, BTS paved the way in USA making it easier for other kpop artist to get opportunities.

Well sure Wonder Girls, SNSD, etc all did things in the US but it's not like anybody cared about what they did even to the point that I don't see kpop fans bringing up the YouTube award SNSD won and it seems like it's been almost completely forgotten about.

WG, Super Junior, SNSD etc. made kpop known in western countries, and without them it's pretty safe to say that BTS wouldn't have made it this quick. But BTS definitely made it more possible for groups to properly promote and make a name for themselves outside the group of kpop fans. 2nd gen laid the groundwork and BTS finished the execution.

No to me 2nd gen still paved the way by creating a niche in us of kpop fans and exporting kpop in us, europe etc... while bts are pushing this boundaries to make more kpop fans.

plus the fact that billboard kpop was created etc....prove that 2nd gen still had an impact

also i don't understand why people are using bts to say that kpop is mainstream, PSY was a much bigger act in the world during gangnam style than BTS, even if it was a meme the result is here, he didn't just make a song viral but also a choregrpahy

Personally, I think she's underrating herself and she seems like a person humble enough to do something like that. But pretending that 2nd gen groups didn't make it plausible to even think about going abroad and make the hallyu wave huge, is just stupid to me.

I feel like some new kpop fans don't even recognize the term "hallyu" because kpop has become recognized as a world wide thing now and not an industry still trying to boarden itself

I love Sunmi but like the groundwork WAS done by the second generation and that does, in fact, include Wondergirls. A lot of fans came into Kpop during the second generation and yes a lot of them were international fans. BTS didn't exist when I and a lot of others came into Kpop.

BTS is the one really bringing it home RIGHT NOW but it wouldn't have been possible if international fans weren't already aware of Kpop because of the work the 2nd generation did-BTS is doing a lot and I am not saying they didn't do anything because without them I mean legit Kpop wouldn't be a hot topic like it is now (not the biggest hot topic but still talked about on youtube and other platforms enough) but groups like Wondergirls, SHINee, PSY, Bigbang, SNSD, 2ne1, and Super Junior did bring in a lot of fans they just didn't hit it as big as BTS.

So I disagree. BTS is paving the way for future Kpop right now. But BTS wouldn't have had any footing without international fans not knowing about Kpop beforehand because of the work of the 2nd generation. I'm sick of people thinking it is one or the other. It's not that SIMPLE.

I think she is right to an extent ( she knows the situation better than us). Idols from the second generation open the door and BTS then pave the way for others groups.
