Has Taeyeon surpassed Boa as the Queen of kpop?

I didn't get into K-pop until early 2014, so I'm honestly not too sure about just how big/popular Boa was in her prime. Obviously I know how much Boa was (and is) loved by a lot of older K-pop fans. I also know how Boa has influenced some of the idols today.

I only really know about and feel Taeyeon's influence, when comparing to Boa. The reason being is that whenever I see someone asking about who the Queen of K-pop is, they name either Taeyeon or IU (between the two, IU is probably named more though). And this is a recurring theme since 2014. A lot of girl idols that debut also talk about their influence being SNSD, with some even mentioning Taeyeon. This is also quite a common theme since I got into K-pop.

Given where K-pop is at right now, and how active and popular Taeyeon still is, along side SNSD still being one of the most popular GG's, I'd say Taeyeon has surpassed Boa. In terms of influence anyway, so I guess Taeyeon is more of a Queen lol.

I won't get into who is more of a queen between Taeyeon and IU though, as that's impossible to say.

Nope, not in Korea not in Japan. Imagine how big was BoA at her peak that I knew her way back in my Jpop days (2005/06), I was not even listening to Kpop nor was I interested on it and she was at Namie Amuro level in JP.

Now she also works as a director at SM, which makes her influence a bit different, but still huge!

I got into kpop in 2010-2011 but by that time I knew who BoA was through Jpop. When I say BoA was at Namie Amuro level in Japan I meant it, like I thought she was Japanese at first. How many korean artists were singing anime ost at that time? mind you, to sing an anime ost (a very popular one) you had to be at the top of the mountain back then.

It's probably still Boa. She's sold over a million copies for her albums more than once, become the first Kpop act to cross over and truly hit it big in Japan, has had her songs used for anime openings, crossed over into acting, promoted in the West etc.

Taeyeon pretty big in her own right but I think it will be a while before we truly see another BoA.

No BoA then SM would not have had the cash on hand to do DBSK, The Grace, SJ, SNSD . There was a dead period after ses Hot and shinwah she bridged that at like 13/14 for pete's sake then went to Japan and single handedly opened the japan market to kpop that DBSK/SNSD ect. built on.

Nov 5 86 and she has been active since 2000.

It has been a long time but just watch the showroom versions of pd 48 every AKS girl knew meri chi.

She is much more a stand still singer than BoA ever was.

Even if BoA isn't at the peak anymore no one can dethrone the Queen. I think a lot of people knew of BoA and know of BoA before kpop. And lets be honest woman still has it in her.

And TBH I think a few more crowns would have to be knocked off for Taeyeon to take the queen spot.

Taeyeon doesn't even come close to the impact BoA has had on kpop, as much as I love Taeyeon's songs.

If you looked at BoA's Wikipedia alone, you'd kind of get the feel of how big BoA was.

It'd be tough for anyone to match BoAs impact not only because she was just genuinely huge in Japan as people just loved her but you also have to account that it was becoming harder for Kpop idols back in the day due to the recession in the market and the idol who stopped SM from closing their doors and not debuting groups like TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls' Generation, SHINee, f(x), EXO, Red Velvet and NCT was BoA.

That kind of impact is something that even a successful idol can go their whole career without getting close to because even if BoA wasn't the first idol act to break out at SM she's just as important in their history as them and Taeyeon just can't really match that in her career because it's rare to get to say you built a Big 2/3/4 company let alone saving the one that has been there through it all.

She might not be releasing hits nowadays but there's a very good reason we still talk about BoA today and why SM doesn't screw with her like they do some of their other artists.

No cos BoA has tat 20th anniversary celebration tat SM made to venerate her.

I doubt Taeyeon would get a 20th anniversary tribute either as a SNSD member or for her solo debut in 2015. In 2027 or 2035, it wont be Taeyeon's 20th anniversary tat SM prioritizes as celebration. Even tho im immensely fave-ing TY solo career n unfamiliar with most of BoA's career(except i was aware of her in some time in the early 00s, cos she made an impact as a foreign korean solo artist in jpn n Asia took notice).

Id say BoA is still Queen of kpop, unless maybe other 2nd gen artist like IU or someone else dethrones her. TY at only 5 yrs aint there nohow.

I love Taeyeon, I really do but she hasn’t surpassed BoA in terms of success. Popularity? Sure. But I’ve noticed that the soloist created by the 2nd gen usually don’t extend their success & influence to the point where they surpass acts before them like RAIN & BoA, it’s not like how the biggest 3rd Gen groups outperform the biggest 2nd Gen groups.

To be the next BoA or even RAIN, a soloist in this gen would have to be competing or on the level of entire groups, haven’t seen a soloist like that in Kpop since the mid 2000’s.
