One thing some people like to say about gymnastics now vs in like the 1970s is about the different body types that top competitors have. I’ve seen plenty of people describing those at the top in the 1970s as “youthful” or saying they had “elegant” or “childlike” or “graceful” bodies. And it’s already kind of eh because they probably just mean they like that they’re skinny and not super visibly muscular, but it feels extra weird because usually the people like that who get commented on are minors. And the people commenting on the bodies are unlikely to be minors because many of them state they have nostalgia for the time. I can understand having a preference for the routines and skills of the time but the whole commenting on their bodies and looks just gives me weird vibes. Especially that person who kept emphasizing how young and childlike Olga Korbut looked (she was 17). They use use phrasing that feels too weird at times :coronawimwim:
