honestly, i don't listen to modern kpop, but one of the things I've definitely noticed about this current kpop scope is that a lot of rookie idols from big companies or backed up by a big company lack the basic singing skills and tend to hide their real actual voices behind live studio tracks or backing tracks during "live" performances, essentially lip syncing. There's been quite a few kpop idols from the 2020s to completely lack in genuine singing skills, breath control and just don't know how to properly and confidently sing live without the help of a backing track. the fact that i'm not a listener of modern kpop and i even KNOW about how these idols look visibly nervous and scared to sing live during encore stages or other life stages without backing tracks is crazy. it shows just how stale kpop has came if these kpop idols are lacking in the basic skills to sing, and im talking about when these idols stand or sit completely still without choreography. i know it's impossible for anyone to sing stable when you're executing olympic styled dances that'll hurt your body as you get older.
i know aside from a few groups of this gen like nmixx and kiss of life, there are of the few groups that can actually SING and sing live, i give more of my props to nmixx for at least having the skills despite being apart of jyp...unlike these other groups that are from big companies or backed by big companies. HYBE and SM have to be the biggest culprits when it comes to their newer idols lacking vocals skills, it's especially jarring in riize's, h2h's, and nct wish's case as the groups is a sm created group, and sm for decades have been known to have EXCEPTIONAL vocal talent, even when groups are rookies, they still delivered flawless vocal performances in songs and whatnot. now don't get me wrong, these groups aren't untalented, but they are among the vocally weakest groups from sm's catalogue, and that's a problem because like i said before, sm is known for having some of the best vocalists in the history of kpop. i've heard people say sohee from riize, carmen from h2h and and nct wish's jaehee being praised for having good vocal skills, they're essentially carrying their entire group while the rest of the members are lacking behind them. Even so, i think sohee, carmen and jaehee are good by modern idol standards, but not by sm standards...😬 really just goes to show that the bar has dropped so low if these members are good by modern idol standards, but they don't live up to absolute legends like chen from exo or wendy from red velvet. the whole "they're well rookies, let them improve" thing doesn't really work with sm now does it? a lot of kpop fans know sm used to rigorously train their vocalists to the extreme to properly belt and sing properly. Man, when lee soo man left sm, everything went downhill. he would have never allowed nct wish, h2h, riize to even step onto stage.
it's also like, these groups already earn their own royalties from music tours, albums and especially those luxury brand deals. they have enough money to afford vocal coaches for themselves or for the group. there's absolutely no excuse. groups like enhypen have been active for six years and are almost reaching their seventh year anniversary, which is contract renewal for all groups. i know member heesung left the group and he was the main person who was SKILLED vocally and was literally carrying the group vocally. when you have one member like that who's carrying the entire group like that, and they leave the group it becomes a huge problem if those members have improved a mere "little bit" or haven't improved at all and are still lacking in genuine vocal improvement six years into their run. i know enhypen are huge globally and they can easily pay for their own vocal coaches, but ive seen a lot of people say how enhypen may not fare well without heesung...and that is an issue...i have a feeling that in the years following, once kpop genuinely gets back into the swing of things and idols being treated as ACTUAL artists and singers, these previous groups that have spent years in their career not improving or improving a little bit are going to be used as case studies in the future and laughing stocks.
to put this into perspective, let me mention seventeen. When seventeen were trainees under pledis, they were broke. Pledis was broke due to all of the stupid decisions they've made with after school and nuest, and seventeen were the company's last chance before the company closed down for good. seventeen had no money themselves as they were broke teenagers, so they had to learn how to split basic living necessities among themselves. since the company couldn't afford vocal coaches, producers and etc for the group, the members had to take matters into their own hands by teaching themselves how to do certain things. like woozi learning how to produce, write and compose songs all by himself, hoshi choreographing a dance all by himself and the other members having to teach themselves out of sheer survival. if a group of 13 broke teenagers was able to arise from a bankrupt company with zero luxury or financial backing, and become one of the critically acclaimed and most skilled groups in the history of kpop, then a kpop group from a big company or backed by a big company has absolutely zero excuse to lack the basics or just lack complete vocal skills entirely.
