Is Dynamite really as bad as everybody says it is? (1 Viewer)

Ever since Dynamite came out, people have been saying all sorts of negative things about the song and BTS as artists. It was mostly because of the fact that it was in English and another pop comeback but, I also saw some fans say that BTS is fully selling out for American attention. Now, because of their Grammy nomination and performance announcement, people have been debating again about whether or not Dynamite really deserves the recognition.

But, is it really as bad as everybody says it is? I might be biased but I feel like BTS did a pretty good job of conveying the retro, pop trend that we have seen in both the Kpop and Western music industry. Sure, the lyrics are a little mismatched but if we look at the bigger picture, I just see another uplifting track that BTS decided to release because of all the issues that are happening in the world.

A song doesn't have to be angsty to be meaningful and if a song like Rain On Me can be praised for doing the same thing, why can't BTS get the same?

It's a pretty good song, imo and I think if it was in Korean, people wouldn't be so quick to judge it and now, its Grammy nomination.

I don't think it's bad, it's just not their best work, but it's still pretty catchy and easy to listen to/sing along to. Very radio friendly, which explains why it did so well even with the gp. Songs like Dynamite and BWL maybe "generic" in a sense but that also gives these a wider appeal than stuff like On/Black Swan etc.

It's not a bad song and it's catchy but tbh just not that memorable if you compare to their other releases.

I personally don't like it at all. They have better songs than Dynamite and It was obvious the song was released in English only to get on the billboards and to be nominated for Grammys. I thought that part was pretty obvious.

I don't think rain on me is a good comparison, Rain on me was sung by two US household big names as with BTS, they are Korean so People are kind of iffy about it I guess. I think they deserve a Grammy, just with a different song. If Dynamite was in Korean, I highly doubt it would be nominated in the first place hence, why they sang it in English

People complain about BTS making deep music and they indirectly shade them by talking about how "kpop doesn't need to be meaningful." But when they actually lighten up, there are complaints about the cheesy lyrics.

BTS are a household name in Korea, not the US. They are well known of course but not up there with Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga and others. If you asked anyone outside the kpop US bubble who they were, they would say " that Korean group". Nonetheless, Even ARMY's think Dynamite wasn't all that so just remember that people have different tastes. Same thing with BWL, not everyone liked it and that's ok. Not everyone likes deep lyrics and some people also don't like cheesy lyrics. It's a matter of preference. BTS is not the only group that goes through double standards with these kinds of things. The Weeknd literally did not get nominated for jack this year and Blinding Lights was one of the best songs released in 2020. Other artists were snubbed too so......

It's a total earworm. Sometimes I even find myself singing it because it's that damn catchy.

But, lol, I just don't like it. I skip it whenever it comes on my playlist. HOWEVER, it's definitely not the worst song ever, but (anti)fans, regardless of which way the cookie crumbles, are prone to exaggerate. I just think it's corny...but people who think it's "that bad" need to evaluate the English lyrics and/or English translations of songs that they DO like and ask themselves honestly if they have a leg to stand on in this discussion (lol). (So, to that point, I kinda agree that if it were in Korean then people wouldn't be so RAWR about it, but meh.)

Sometimes I think, outside the fandom, some of the hatred comes from overexposure. As in people who don't like BTS hearing Dynamite on two commercials, on the radio, in stores during their everyday lives and more or less getting triggered, lol. As for inside the fandom, there's always the discussion of eras and liking other eras more and "this song deserves this type of attention more than Dynamite" and "BTS has changed" and "BTS sold out," which means most new music they release will be hated, especially one that's so clearly meant for the Western market.

Sometimes it's not about the music, but about how they feel about the group itself (or maybe their fans). They just say it's about the music lol.
