He criticized both. Calling idols brainwashed is definitely not a complimentHe didn't really criticize idols he criticized system, especially the training period and remoulding someones personality by first beating it down. At most he feels bad for idols in that position and feels relief of getting out of the system (very soonish).
He doesn't have lot of freedom even less in sense than 2PM who are seniors in company. What he had more freedom was song writing, however he was forced to close down his youtube account just cause it didn't fit image of company, had to close his twitch over calling someone his sugar daddy and he wasn't able to monetize his own music. He was also excluded from groups activities without his consent.I like Jae but what I don't get, is how he's always saying shit like this but bro you're in a band? Technically an idol but still very very far off from like, Stray Kids or Got7 or 2PM. Be grateful for the freedom you get.
I really dislike how pretentious he sounds. If I listened to him say it without watching the video, I'd expect him to be holding a craft beer and sporting a tiny douche beard. "soul-searching" what does that even mean...
kpop stans know the industry is controlling and messed up. other (ex-)idols and trainees have spoken about this before, fans criticize it too. i understand jae may not have intended to shade anyone but in this specific instance (and another interview i read actually) it definitely comes across that way. he straight up said "kpop idols are brainwashed but not me cause i actually did some ~soul searching~", if that doesnt sound shady then i dont know. i for sure would be offended if someone talked about me and my collegues this wayThey are though. Calling him edgy, hipstery whatever is talking over his bad experience and comes over as kpop fans feeling superioty complex over idol and telling him what he can talk about his experiences. Doesn't he have right to see things like he does as someone who lived through them? Even if its' not easy to hear or stomach.
He's not really shading anyone his grief is about industry and he is always praising other idols. People just took it that way.
I'm sorry if it hurts kpop stan feeligns, but there is reason why many see kpop industry that way. Cause it does have these issues.
What about being molded to personality ur company wants is not brainwashing though? He is not only idol who said being kpop idol messed up with their persona and they had to find themselves again (for example after school bekah on anthony padilla's interview.).He criticized both. Calling idols brainwashed is definitely not a compliment![]()
it's like the "invalidate other ppls experience and put them down to elevate yourself" kind of thing you just don't do in generally, especially as a K-Pop Idol, you know how hard they have it so shitting on them doesn't really make it any better - ofcourse the way he phrases it still doesn't invalidate his experience if people like us comment and judge him about what he is saying, but there's just better way to word things - which I usppose for a non scripted podcast and kind of like "out of the blue" is hard to dothe thing is, no one is invalidating his experiences. no one is denying his struggles, it his choice of words and the way he shades fellow idols that doesnt sit well with people. you can explain the problems you have with the industry without throwing your collegues under the bus. "i didnt get to make the music i wanted, i was molded into this version of jae that im not, i felt like a puppet of the industry" etc. thats all fine, kpop stans can sympathize with that. but going on record saying idols are brainwashed and manufactured and implying theyre robotic, cant think for themselves,... is not the move. thats exactly the same terminology edgy dochebags like keemstar use to disparage and mock kpop stans and idols, so i can understand the backlash.
That's kinda the most negative read you can take on it and I don't think you have to choose to see it that way. Maybe for me I have more context from what he has talked on his ig lives etc. so I see more where he is coming from with this. Which is pretty much him criticizing industry beating kpop idols down during trainee process constantly telling them they aren't good enough and dictating how the can be.kpop stans know the industry is controlling and messed up. other (ex-)idols and trainees have spoken about this before, fans criticize it too. i understand jae may not have intended to shade anyone but in this specific instance (and another interview i read actually) it definitely comes across that way. he straight up said "kpop idols are brainwashed but not me cause i actually did some ~soul searching~", if that doesnt sound shady then i dont know. i for sure would be offended if someone talked about me and my collegues this way
technically the definition of brainwashing is making someone believe in something by repeatedly telling them that it is the truth and not letting them have their own beliefs. now of course having a personality molded to appeal to the public is not exactly a good thing but it's not brainwashing. it even happens to people in ordinary non-celebrity jobs where for example you have to be kind to your customers even though they annoy the f*ck out of you so that you don't lose your job. sure i wish kpop companies didn't force people to be who they're not but jae isn't changing that by calling his fellow idols brainwashed. What about being molded to personality ur company wants is not brainwashing though? He is not only idol who said being kpop idol messed up with their persona and they had to find themselves again (for example after school bekah on anthony padilla's interview.).
Also he said this about himself, "into the model you see before you today". So he does relate this to himself pretty strongly.
even if i don't agree with what he said i gotta give it to him that this is the first time i've seen someone call themselves unwashed in a positive contextOne phone call from JYP and he'll be on Twitter crying and apologizing.
Again.
Unwashed and u manufactured my ass
The way not showering was the theme of this yeareven if i don't agree with what he said i gotta give it to him that this is the first time i've seen someone call themselves unwashed in a positive context![]()
He is saying it cause it is about him and his experience.I don't understand why he's starting to say all this weird comments on the kpop industry when it includes him![]()
Agreed, man gives me pick me guy vibes ngl 🤔there were times when I really liked Jae ... but the more you listen to him, you get the idea that he is this "edgy, hypstery" kind of dude.
Jae if you want to you can always leave.
While the particular clip sounds better in context I have to say that the fact he's saying he admires JYP minutes later comes across as pretty tone deaf considering Sunmi has mentioned JYP wanting her to sing a certain way and her leaving JYP just to experiment with singing.Anyways, this is pretty strongly related to the "brainwashing" comment, sadly wasn't rly clipped on shared on twitter, maybe cause there is no drama to get from it?
