They say mindfulness and living in the moment is one of the keys to happiness. I do think that a lot of people live in the in the past or the future rather than the present... I am one of them too, but I'm working on changing that and freeing myself from the chains of the past and the fears of the future hehe, so what about you? :P

I'm probably more focused on the future in worrying about finances and such and focused on the past in wishing I had done certain things differently.

I am really conflicted about this and similar statements.
"live each day as if it were your last"

A. It is beyond irresponsible to not consider long term effect of choices. Sure some times we choose in the moment and most of those do not have far reaching effects, but to not ever consider consequences... not smart or doable.

B. if you do not plan a future someone else will, and they will own you.

C. its just not possible. If a person knew that today was the last the were ever getting they would of course choose to do, visit , see different things. But those do not need or even want to happen every day. Unless you are independently wealthy your need to address the bad habits of living, sleeping(indoors ) and eating regularly.

I think what they really mean is more "wherever you go there you are" choose to embrace that moment and make it yours.

I don’t think that’s how the people who made that quote intended it to be interpreted. It’s not saying to act irresponsibly and do whatever you want because it’s your last day alive. It’s more like “act without regrets.” For example, if you died today and the last thing you said to your family was something mean and spiteful, wouldn’t you feel regretful? That’s what it means. If you die today, make sure your life was worth living and you died without regretting something. That’s my interpretation of it at least.

I agree that is what i think they intended, but like YOLO these sayings seem to get warped into justification for questionable choices.

Living in the moment and forgetting the past(I look at this as saying the past happened but i own it, the past does not own me. Obviously some things can never be fixed, do what ya can, accept it and move forward) are powerful tools to shape a life, but so are regret, foresight, perspective and kindness.

depends on what i'm doing, if its something that does have large consequnces and won't alter my life or anyone elses than sure, i can just do some stupid shit in the moment. but i've always tried to balance impulsive ness & organisation. Play hard, Work hard sort of ethic i suppose.
