Cassandra Clare anything and also Holly Black anything. I think Clare's books are tired and over done and that Holly Black's most beloved series is hot garbage but everyone LOVES it.

ill admit i enjoy harry potter but theyre VERY overrated. the books are 80% filler and description imo, and theyre way too long. also the author is very controversial so ion support

Yea i read the first book.

The problem is if they make movies the movie becomes the cannon.

it is why i hate the LOTR movies so much they totally tell a different story loosely based on teh LOTR.

I was fine with it until my english teacher pointed out the misogyny of it lmao

I honestly feel like the divergent franchise marked the beginning of the watering down of dystopian ya in general
the hunger games were by no means perfect, but thematically it was pretty solid; it was the later dystopian ya that turned thg's reputation for the worse
a lot of the tropes that people like to complain about in dystopian ya (useless love triangles, chosen one mcs, 16yo protagonist who is more competent than literally any adult, mindless fighting) kind of started with divergent imo. while thg has some of those tropes, they are mostly subverted: katniss never wanted to be the chosen one and was used as a piece of propaganda, katniss is aware that she is essentially powerless in the rebellion, katniss eventually realizes that a lot of the fighting she engages in is useless, and the whole love triangle thing was to point out the shallowness of the capitol

but I do suppose divergent is good for some mindless reading, as with most ya lit

most ya lit I don't enjoy as much: I think I've only genuinely liked Hunger Games, Scythe, and Six of Crows in the past few years
maybe it's because I'm mentally way beyond the targeted audience even though I'm in the middle of said targeted audience's age range, maybe it's because I just don't enjoy romance all that much ???
half of fantasy feels like an excuse for the author to write faery porn (I'm sorry), a lot of books have inflated ratings

not a franchise, but god I hate sapiens too (the book). no clue why it's so highly praised when some basic critical thinking when reading would raise several red flags.

Spoiler: rant

I enjoy Harari's writing, and his goal is commendable, but the actual contents of the book? I had to stop when he started with the Americas: after that it was just a lot of bad takes using cherry-picked evidence. The whole goal of the book meant that everything would be really watered down, but I was not expecting some takes including: Victorian imperialism was good because it forced other countries to industrialize themselves, out hunter gatherer ancestors lived healthier and happier lives than us (lmao), and that the Incas were too naive and self-absorbed which is why they got so easily conquered by the Spaniards
