WayV (Chinese: ๅจ็ฅV; pinyin: WฤiShรฉn V) is one of the sub-units of the boy group NCT, known for their sleek and sophisticated sound,
dynamic vocals and intricate, elegant choreography. The group's name comes from the acronym "We Are Your Vision" and is based
in China, although they promote and create songs in Mandarin, Korean and English. They also promote across all the same platforms
as other hallyu groups, like the Korean music shows. The group has 6 active members: Kun, Ten, Winwin, Xiaojun, Hendery and YangYang.
WayV was the third fixed NCT unit and includes 2 members of NCT's debut units for "The 7th Sense" and "Without You", as well as
a member who was in NCT 127. It has faced many disruptions - the group was originally planned to launch at a similar time to NCT 127 and NCT Dream, titled NCT China and later NCT Vision, but was delayed due to political tensions between China and Korea. When the group was finally announced in 2018, ongoing tensions created a separation between the unit and the other NCT units, which is why it has a separate name, nightstick and fandom name. The group only began to be promoted with NCT as part of the NCT 2020 Resonance event and has been openly stated by both SM and members.
WayV faced additional issues in August 2021 when the group's seventh member, Lucas, went on hiatus due to a scandal. This delayed the previously announced release of the group's second full album and halted schedules. The group did not release any new music for 22 months, although some of the other members remained active on television shows, movies and radio shows. SM has still not clarified his status in the group, but has removed him from all promo materials, including some materials relating to earlier eras.
(It's worth noting SM never officially announced Winwin left NCT 127 either, although he is clearly a WayV member now.)
WayV is now the smallest unit and as the newest unit also has the smallest discography. Like other NCT units, the disco has a heavy R&B and hip hop emphasis, however, like NCT Dream, it has less of a hip hop emphasis than NCT 127. Its music ranges from electropop to future bass to dance to rock to Latin pop to hip hop to synthpop. WayV is also the only sub-unit with official mini units, which released songs: WayV Kun & Xiaojun (a vocal unit) and WayV Ten & YangYang (a performance unit). The third unit, WayV Lucas & Hendery (a performance unit), did not launch.
WayV is also the only sub-unit with pets - and the pets have actually been woven into official WayV merchandise!
The pets are Leon and Louis, cats owned by Ten, and Bella, a beagle owned by Xiaojun.
