Firstly spoiler alert, don’t read further unless you’ve reached the end of book 7.

Okay anyways now that we got the posers out of the way :llama_laugh:
At the end of the book, during the battle, Molly and Bellatrix are fighting, and Molly wins. However, to be more exact, Molly hits Bellatrix with a spell, and Bellatrix dies immediately after. In the books we are only introduced to one spell that does that, the killing curse, an unforgivable curse. Does that mean Molly used an curse worthy of landing her in Azkaban (along with Harry who used the Imperio curse)? I’ve never been able to look at Molly the same ever since I realized this ngl :pepelook:
Anyways, what do you guys think? And if it was the killing curse where did she get the practice from? So many questions

She didn’t use the killing curse. The killing curse is the only one where the specific goal of the spell is to kill, but it’s not the only one that can kill. There are various dueling spells where aim and where on the opponent the spell hits matters as much as the spell itself. Curses and hexes, and some charms can too depending how they’re used. For example, snape’s invention, sectumsempra can very easily cause someone to bleed to death where it’s used although it’s not a spell with the main goal being to kill.

I always thought she used a powerful charm that hit bellatrix straight in her heart and stopped it

That’s also how many wizards could die in duels/battles/fights without the killing curse being used on them

I guess that’s possible, it just seems weird that spells with the same overall effect as the killing curse is okay to use but ig they do need some way to kill enemies without being too illegal :susPepe:

The thing with the killing curse is an insta-kill. There's no defense, there's no skill required, only pure hate.

Other spells are like weapons, can be countered, blocked, dodged, missed, do a lot of damage or little damage depending on where, how, and by who they are used, and also don't need hate to function. All the unforgiveable curses require pure hate to be used. Harry couldn't use the cruciatus curse on Bellatrix after she killed Sirius bc even then it wasn't pure hate

The rest are for weapons purposes for battles, fights, and all that, it's not pure murder like the killing curse. You can't murder someone with anything else, but can accidentally kill them, or kill them in a fight

I just checked, and yeah, Molly's spell hit Bellatrix in the chest. So it was a powerful spell and because of Molly's skill, the fact Bellatrix didn't block or counter it, and that it hit her heart, it stopped it

Well Harry did use an unforgivable curse iirc, imperio, but that may not require the level of hate of the cruciatus curse or the killing curse. But I still fail to see how being killed skillfully is different, I’m sure those who die from a different charm or something aren’t too happy either :haylul:
Like for the sake of the book it does make sense, ig I’m just being nitpicky about whether spells that can kill are okay and under which circumstances are they and whatnot.

Yeah, later

bc it’s not pure murder, it’s killing in battle, there’s no defense against the killing curse, it’s murder, there’s no way for it not to be

other curses are just weapons for battle, like a sword

there’s no weapon equivalent of the killing curse, I guess a bomb vest

there’s a difference btwn using that on someone and fighting with swords and killing the other person

the unforgivable curses are unforgivable bc their whole purpose is an unforgivable one, and can’t be used in any other way

you could probably torture people with other spells too
