I feel like they should.

girl groups don't even have a chance to win album of the year the majority of the time because they lack in physical sales. I dont even think i could count a time where a gg has won album of the year and if they did it was a rare occurrence. even mid tear boy groups sell more than the majority of the biggest kpop girl groups. it doesn't matter how much impact the album had, because it lacks physical sales it won't win. I feel like this is unfair. unlike in the west where women and men usually can sell the same amount of albums (women actually lead in terms of album sales), in kpop, girl groups will always just be at a disadvantage, so should we make the album of the year have two categories for ggs and bgs?

maybe SES Finkl or SNSD.
SNSD did get the GD Album award in 2010
and led gaon in 2011 the first year they have numbers up for.
But as you can see it was a different numbers era.

TTS were 8th with 144k in 2012. Fist females until tara and fx at 20 and 21 kara at 23.
This illustrates why comparing raw numbers is disingenuous between eras. Gotta be in context.

2013 snsd was 2nd. First female and only until fx pink tape at 28.

2014 SNSD was 5th then fx at 19 and tts at 22 only females until apink at 31.

SNSD were monsters. as were fx compared to the field.

Eh, nah. We need to fix the industry, not cover issues up by balancing it out.
It’s not really something you can fix. Bgs just appeal more to fan girls then girl groups do and fan girls are always more dedicated then fanboys.

I just looked ses and finkl were not close to HOT who was 2-3 x more.
SNSD is the only GG act that hung with them boys of there era at peak
this is kinda my point, no matter how much a girl group sells, there will always be a bg that sells more...

Now especially its the way they are marketed..
BP is female focused and driven but as big as the numbers are they sell a fraction per fan that BTS or EXO do.
Mostly because YG does not target physicals at all if he did they would have real albums.
EXO solos are as big or bigger than bp albums.
Twice does a really nice job of maximizing its fan base . and JYP has targeted physicals from the start. Were not BTS and EXo just crazy they would be close to hanging.
IZONE is crazy the sales they get form a significantly smaller fanbase than any other top gg is nuts.
RV is pretty much capped out in the mid 100's(unless this years crazy gg spike hits them too)

even then, a lot of mid tear boy groups are selling more than the most popular girl groups, so they never really have a chance at winning aoty.

You would need to do the same for boy groups with the digital daesang since boy groups competing with a girl group digitally is just as rare.

I'm opposed to the idea though because it devalues daesangs and it will inflate groups daesang counts compared to other groups.

I'm more for @notthatmarko idea of all categories being genderless since the rookie awards are never competitive, it's always one group dominating but maybe genderless would make it competitive.

Honestly the bgs that are winning aoty are not hurting In terms of digitals
The real solution to this would be to have physicals not matter as much as they do. And have awards be about sales and musical critics opinions. But I feel like that wouldn’t happen.
the only reason why I’m suggesting separate categories is because of the fact that girl groups are at a heavy disadvantage due to physicals making up the majority of the criteria, like it’s not even a thing where a ggs fandom could work up to it considering how biased the kpop industry is to boy groups. A girl group hasn’t won album of the year since 2011. And before that it was still heavily dominated with bgs winning.

How can you make physicals not matter and focus on sales when physicals are sales? Furthermore, IU won Album of the Year on MMA with Pallete.

I never said for physicals to not matter. I said for them to not matter as much as they do Rn. The dream would be for kpop award shows to get actual critics for albums and combine their ratings with sales. Iu won at the mmas because of digitals. She had 10 tracks and the Korean public checks out every single one of her songs and streams them all. She also had G-Dragon for a collab. Of course she would win album of the year at the mmas. , she also won at the Seoul music awards for palette as well. But she’s a soloist and before that it was still a male dominated category.

BTS is the only one right now who can compete digitally consistently but even when they won last year was because the year was pretty dry and this year will be way harder for them to win especially with Any Song and Eight.

You can't make physicals matter more for the song of the year though to make that an even trade because song of the year can only be judged on digitals which is what makes the album of the year judged on physicals except for MMA which is a digital show but they do what they want basically anyway.

The only way to have a girl group win an album of the year right now is if there is separate gender categories since BTS would still dominate pretty much anyone in digitals too and I feel a gender category would just make the daesang worthless because it's basically best male/female artist but physical edition at that point.

Even without bts there was still a lot of bgs who won soty of the before, it’s not something that they struggled to win unlike girl groups. If there was another way to make it so girl groups could win more album of the year daesangs without having to make a separate category then I would go for that 100% but I can’t seem to find another way that would actually work.

Giving gender categories to the daesang will just make it absolutely pointless and a confusing mess like say they introduced that next year then what's to stop Onces saying "Twice technically have won 3 more daesangs"? Nothing would stop that if that happened.
