its different, agency's in the us now mostly just do promo they are far less involved in all the nuts and bolts than any of the Korean agencies.

This seems like SM planning to switch to a HYBE type model to reduce internal complexity & cutting out risk. It is a much smarter strategy than trying to have top-level management at a giant company which doesn't work well. This will likely allow artists like BoA who likely want to try their hand at "creating" idol groups like other 1st gen & 2nd gen idols have done without being forced to leave SM. While HYBE's labels are independent subsidaries, they still are directly accountable to HYBE for finances and I expect this theoretical situation to be no different.

It's an interesting discussion. It feels like there was a giant bottleneck that this proposed to remove and hopefully adding additional oversight can avoid the pile-up we see at the end of the year for SM. I understand wanting to make the 4th quarter the most successful possible from a shareholder view but there's no reason they can't do a better job of pacing out releases throughout the year (smaller releases can come earlier in the year). Even if they couldn't predict things like the delays for periods of mourning in Korea and China, there's no reason to pile everything up with such a large roster of artists.


I counted about 40 active artists at SM (not counting military enlistments or artists on the sub-labels.) and another 10 potential ones who have released singles but not albums (basically the NCT mains).

My head screams train wreck incoming, but i hope they can pull it off.

How they will split up the existing groups into these 5 teams will be interesting.
and it appears they are going to go the way of Hybe and buy up more agencies and labels.

And a commitment to debuting 2+ groups a year..... after decades of 1 group every 3 years... 40 albums will not get it done if we look at your list they will need 50+ easy.

The ANR team at teh top is going to be a killer bottle neck.

Ya notice they said f all about successful songs, just album sales which they are projecting as FLAT. (but spinning as increased[ do they work in the government?] 14mill to 18 mill up 30 % but they are planning 30% more albums.) assuming cost stay the same..... which with the crazy bloated bureaucracy i find hard to believe :)
A real increase would be in the low 20 million range.

AS a red Velvet fan i am not covered in trust.
supposedly last year we were getting a comeback or song per season what we got was FMR and Birthday ( a really strange winter song)
A concert that was canceled and still is not firmly rescheduled.

This sounds like a good plan in theory but very hard to put in practice, so it's bound to not work perfectly well at first.

I think the idea of splitting the artists into different production branches is great because it will help differentiate SM's groups sound. One of the things that wasn't working very well for SM these past few years was that songs released by their groups were almost interchangeable, since the same people were behind almost every song. So this could be a good change; that is, if each production team knows each group's selling point music-wise. It will be interesting to see it all unfold.

Yeah last year was really fucked up for RV. I'm sure Birthday was supposed to be an August comeback and they were gonna drop the third mini by the end of the year with a velvet style song (or perhaps a repackage like Finale in 2019), and nothing can be convince me otherwise. But something really must have happened and they changed the plans.

I wonder when RV3 will finally come and whether they will pick up where they left off (with ReVe Festival) or scrap everything they had and start fresh. I'd like a different type of concept and not another trilogy thing.

SM reminds me of those tech companies that have top level engineering talent but not enough business sense. We know what happens to firms like those --- cost cutting and layoffs. Or acquisition/merger.

SM's artists and their music are great, but the way they schedule releases and tours is way suboptimal.

There are some cool sounding bits to this if it works...

Kpop in generals reluctance to tour always amazes me. Its the life blood of westerns acts to hit the road from the little clubs up to stadiums (which i hate with a passion)
Maybe it is just flat too hard for the kids, as seen by some of the recent tours where girls were dropping like flies. WG did like 50 stops but that is as openers not a full night of singing and dancing.

Do you think there's a chance for an actual world tour for RV (apart from the festivals they are doing)? It kinda surprised me to see them being confirmed for a summer festival in Europe which made me think they have tour plans for them in mid-2023 indeed.
