It could be over Jiyoon leaving but that's still a bad sign as take what fromis has gone through in between this comeback and the last from Gyuri leaving and it gives you the impression the company has lost interest in the group and while this is Pledis however not only is IST questionable itself but this isn't a rare situation.

Oh My Girl have said before that Secret Garden was make or break for them and if they didn't succeed they would be disbanded which this was the comeback after JinE officially left so WM weren't willing to push Oh My Girl anymore if they didn't get something to show for it and I wouldn't be surprised if IST is at that point with Weeekly.


I don't follow her myself but I was told by Yoda that her latest song was doing well and rising at one point so it's possible WM pulled her thinking they could miss a potential opportunity for her to breakout as a soloist if she stayed.

Being a pure soloist unrelated to any group is legitimately the hardest path in the industry because there are examples of female soloists who have multiple hits and fail to even sell 50,000 like Ailees is only 10k.

The overall problem is a couple of things with one being that Kpop fans are inherently group biased so a case like IU is incredibly rare and then there's not being able to do everything like Oh My Girl can do 6 different schedules in a day while a soloist can only ever do a single one and production costs for MVs and songs is still high regardless of soloist or group.

It does have the benefit of being able to do your own thing but if you want a long lasting career to make money from then it's better to be in a group as you'd be incredibly rare to build a fanbase that can rival even some medium level groups.

I think the point you mentioned that they are not able to establish a fanbase is the main issue that causes pretty much all other issues, but its just apparent that solo acts can't attract fans for some reason. I also wonder a bit why that is, as solo acts in the west can become super stars in many instances, but in KPOP its just not possible.

I think you're overstating After Schools success as from what I can see it peaked at 135 on the Melon daily chart not even cracking the top 100 although information on Oh My Girl old songs is hard to find for Melon nowadays.

I did look at the Gaon numbers though and After School hit 155 while Oh My Girls lowest is Cupid at 103 with everything else cracking the top 100.

I think it's just a difference in consumerism as when it comes to the Korean public they just don't seem to really want to buy albums so you get a group like Sistar who released chart topping hit after hit and yet their highest album was only 25k and that's the exact same thing with Bol4 when they were a duo so there's a pattern there potentially.

but when sistar was still active was a very different time and now a lot of albums are sold.. at least for groups

The increase in album sales does nothing for this argument though as that came from fandoms which even Chungha only sold 30k as a more recent example and she had I.O.I still but even for the time Sistars 25k was noticeably weak compared to other girl groups.
