WEEEKLY Is Positioned To Potentially Become Very Big
WEEEKLY is a group that debuted 2 weeks ago.
Of all the groups debuting recently, in my opinion WEEKLY is the type of group with the right vibe and support to take advantage of a current opportunity in kpop.
With TWICE moving away from their brighter youthful focused image, there's an opening for a bright, charming, youthful group to fill that cute void. (I use the term cute in a very loose sense to encompass a group that's essence is more fun, bright and isn't about edge and overt swagger).
FROMIS_9 may have missed it as they debuted before TWICE's move away from their mainstay. IZONE though channeling some of this, is temporary. GFRIEND has moved away from their more youthful cute dynamic long ago. SMNGG has yet to debut and we don't know if they are even being groomed for this type of appeal.
Most of the other top groups are recently doing more girl crush (again loose) or internationally focused output. They're looking outward.
But what about the center of Kpop dominance? Korean appeal.
There's a real opportunity for the ascendance of a bright, fun, charming girl group to grab Korean appeal and ascend as a new girl group champion.
PlayM (APINK's agency) backs WEEEKLY, and seemingly is putting out all the stops for them. There's a real sense they are pushing them with a lot of support and forethought.
Their debut Tag Me itself, lacked nothing. It was a perfectly executed cute pop song with perhaps the best chorus and hook I've heard in years. Bright fun, with memorable charming choreo and a well done MV. It's got 13 million views in 2 weeks. Very good for a rookie debut from non big 3.
The group is stacked with visuals. They have a range of well rounded talent and ability. They've been given extensive pre debut material. And continued releases of supporting content to supplement the MV.
PlayM seems serious about getting this group the best shot to thrive and land.
There just doesn't seem to be any weak spots with them.
There are challenges. The focus has moved international in kpop so if there isn't enough demand for a TWICE like group again yet, that may hurt their chances. They aren't Big 3, but hopefully they can channel some of the perseverance of APINK to overcome this. SMNGG also looms.
But... if PlayM can keep this momentum. If the stars can align and give them their shot. I think they're in a great position to capitalize on the moment.
Finally, I'll say this.
If I was company exec for an agency and my boss said... Make me a group that will fill the cute void in kpop right now. I don't know that I could make one better that WEEEKLY.
They just need their moment.
This Daily hopes it comes
Eman out.
