I definitely think parents who can’t disciple their kids without threatening them with some kinda violence aren’t putting in enough thought and effort. If you're planning to have kids, be more responsible and think it through.
My oldest cousin who has been hit as kid is now a dad of 3 and his kids are so well behaved. He’s a former Marine, currently and army recruiter. Never once does he think about raising his hand to any of them. They love being kids, they love hanging out with their family, there’s so much trust between the kids and parents.
I didnt have that level of trust with my parents till college. I’m half Indian and was raised in a predominately Indian household. Also from the era of you will get your ass whooped with a slipper, rolling pin, or the thing we pressed hot tortillas with. My mom rarely did this. It was more fake threats to get me to pay attention in Science. My dad was more slap forward with the disciple. And my dad's sisters lived with us growing up so they felt the need to disciple the same way. Everyone was very verbally abusive too.
On top of that, they fought so much growing up and it seemed like they finally got along when both my brother and I moved out. How are kids not supposed to feel like they were responsible for their parent’s fighting all the time. Everything looked like a domino effect.
You can raise your kids without making them fear you.
And I understand there’s levels of physical disciple.
^This was “normal” for people my age and immigrant households growing up.
We’re far from “normal” tho. We’re riddled with anxiety about everything. We're just conditioned to power through because there's rent and bills to pay and we worked so hard getting out of that hole so I can finally have a whole pizza to myself on Friday night while binging Friends.
Today, it's a joke we throw around but that's how we deal with it. If I bring it up in a serious manner, I'm scared they'll stop talking to me so I never bring it up.
I do love my parents still and want to continue having a relationship with them.
Rethink having kids if you think physical disciple is the the way to go.
