When I was a child I used to have this material mindset [as many children do] and think that I would take living in cheap housing if it meant being able to have more money for luxury items. To be clear, when I was young I didn't live in good neighborhoods, but having little money for anything I thought that not having to pay 90% of one's monthly income on rent would be a good thing.

Having grown up and lived under slum lords who enjoy the fact that you don't live in rent controlled areas and increase rent yearly by rates that aren't conducive to keeping one's head above water changed that ideal pretty quick. lol
