So there was a thing going around that some of you might have heard of. It was about 1984 (the book) and it’s supposed ban in the US for being pro communist and in the USSR for being anti communist. Well from what I’ve seen it was only banned in one school in Florida for being “pro communist” but I still find it funny how it can be banned from 2 different places for completely opposing reasons. It is interesting for sure

I loved 1984 when we read it in high school! I also liked Animal Farm, which I was assigned in eighth grade.

But anyway, I don't think it should even matter if it's pro- or anti-communist, because what really matters is what students learn from it.

Some kids in my high school had to read it, but only those who had a certain teacher, and I didn't have that teacher, so I've never read it, we read smth else instead, I don't remember what exactly because I think the readings only differed there

I have heard that the 1930's movie adaptation of "All Quiet on the Western Front" was banned in Poland for being "pro-German", but banned in Germany for being "anti-German".

I tend to say 1984 is a cautionary tale not a guide.

as to the over arching story there is the back drop of east v west basically 2 authoritarian governments one supposed to be the ussr type but neither is pleasant or remotely human although both claim to be.

most of the book is set in the "west"

It seems to be the reaction of a group to the exact same thing. The way a group is portrayed could be regarded as offensive by that group considering it "anti" while another group may regard it offensive considering it "pro".
