I am not an expert. Reading what literally any proper vocal teacher has said about why technique is needed, has taught me this.

So here are some singers who are said to have bad technique by experts

  • Adele - Had to cancel big concerts due to losing her voice because of bad technique
  • Frank Sinatra - Vocal nodules, didn't speak for a month to get better
  • Mariah Carey - struggles to sing her old songs (and the newer ones) live, but used to have no problems
Bad technique doesn't mean you sound bad singing. Bad technique means you are hurting your vocal chords when singing. That can overtime add up and make it more and more difficult to sing. From losing your voice to more extreme things.

Bad technique is not a little thing idols can worry about later. Unless they are lipsyncing most of their performaces (Well now that I think about it, it does seem like most idols can put it off!) good technique is needed. At least if they want to continue to sing for a long time!

here be my sources! Literally 5 minutes of research!

Park Bom is an example.

I'm worried about the path most idols are going down just because I've watched their vocal teachers just tell them to sing crazy ass high notes and not think about it. Like...no that...NO

Adele is very open about being pitchy and generally having bad technique so it's very laughable when some of these Kpop stans act like;
Superior technique = Superior voice
If that was true, Krystal and Nayeon wouldn't have gotten most of the lines in their group's songs. In the Pop world, vocal tone matters just as much as technique, if not more. Technique will take you far with classical music but not mainstream.

Why SM is better than the others. They have good vocal teachers!

Like the one they were sending on shows like Unnies slam dunk and Idol school! He was great! And he seems like he actually knew his stuff!

Legit. But I remember watching some PD episodes and the teachers would just be like hey...hit this note...even if it's not in your range don't think about it just hit it!

LIKE NO YOU FUCKING IDIOT.

I feel like that is a huge part of why SM has good vocals. Their vocal teachers are not just professionals, but can deal with young emotional teenagers.

Imagine. The trainees are young, tired, going through puberty, the young ones are missing home, Some are from a different country and can't speak Korean... Those vocal teachers are probably used to trainees crying on them.

yea right. jessica's success is all thanks to sm's vocal teachers who saw her crying about not being able to sing, told her to come with them and worked one on one until she became the singer she is today :yolk: it's all about confidence and nurturing and they did it so well.

Yes that's true. I think bad singing is bad singing.

And good singing is good singing. Technique talk is just geeks with too much time on their hands and they talk rubbish most the time too.
I don't get you right here...

Are you saying i am wrong? Or that you don't care? Or that you agree with me, but can't be bothered to think about this, bcs I am confused!

EXO's D.O is really close with his teacher aswell apparently!

SM also has multiple vocal teachers and they are all probably different.
I think they place a trainee with a teacher according to their voice etc, because D.O's teacher used to be an R&B singer and I am pretty sure that guy only taught D.O in EXO.

I see the point of damaging your voice, but I think vocal technique is still overrated a bit or more maybe one type of technique? Like lot of singing to me is delivery of emotions, but I see singing styles like breathy vocals being put down when it's not necessarily that bad to vocals even it's just style and delivery method. Personally I like artistry and good singing tone and style lot more than clean up vocals, I would rather listen opera or sth i was that into vocals ^^;

Most of my favorite vocalists are apparently not that good like Florence from Florence and the Machine as well as IU, these two surprised me cause to me they are vocal queens.

But well i do get the damaging your voice part, vocalists should get enough teaching to take care of their voice. But not in a way it kills artistry and their style of delivery.

I see it like if you have technique, you will be able to have more variety when singing. You can do more with your voice. You will still be able to do what you did before, it won't take that away. It will only give you more you can do.

Let's take SM vocals! They still sometimes strain with high notes even though it isn't good for the voice. Why? Because it sounds better and as long as they aren't straining throughout the whole song and performing songs like that 10 in a row, it doesn't do much if any damage.

Sure, but when our voice gets destroyed, let's see how well we can sing then.
The examples you listed above are perfect for this.
I am just so done with the comments like:

I like his singing! His vocals sound so good, so how can his technique be bad?

Technique is needed so you fave can go on singing beautifull like that!

I agree with the first part actually, if you have technique you should know more what you are doing and what you can do with your voice, play around more.

But.. I actually don't like SM vocals. Like I have quite few singers I like from SM in terms of sound and singing styles, these are Xiah Junsu, Tiffany and Krystal. Well Jaejoong is pretty great too. And at least Tiffany and Krystal aren't actually considered good at singing.

Usually when people say this group has good vocals or good technique, I know it's not for me ^^;

i guess when you're in the spotlight and you can never know for sure how long you'd be able to be there, that concerns about longevity just goes out the window lool

The point I was trying to make is that technique in no way makes the singing less emotional or artistic. Technique allows them to express those things in a healthy or at least minimally damaging way.
