“hyun-suk! hyun-suk! it’s your birthday!” the nine-year old boy rushed towards his best friend. the eleven year old birthday boy grinned widely, a smile erupting on his face. “jinyoung! you came! and you made a cake!” jin-young’s mother heaved as she ran behind her son.

“ah, hyun-suk, happy birthday boy.” she ruffled his hair motherly and hyun-suk smiled. “thanks yeemo.” he said happily, eager to devour the cake. “wait for one minute! hyun-suk!” hyun-suk cheekily smeared some frosting on his hand and ran off with his best friend to play behind their house as their mothers chatted and set up the cake.

the boys played in the dirt, chasing each other and telling jokes, playing dirty tricks to win the round of tag they were on. “you’re gonna be my best friend forever right?” jinyoung said innocently and hyun-suk sighed.

“stop, that’s being girly.” “promise?” hyun-suk grumbled, but eventually wrapped pinkies with jinyoung. “promise.” the younger smiled and hyun-suk felt he did something right as they were summoned to eat some cake before jinyoung had to leave.

“happy birthday hyun-suk.” jinyoung hugged him and left a present on his bed.
hyun-suk never opened it.

“so that’s it then.” jinyoung’s words rang empty in hyun-suk’s head. “I told you already, it would come to this. stop being so optimistic, god jinyoung!” jinyoung stumbled back as if physically hit.

“hyun-suk…” his voice was pained, but getting firmer, no longer the naive nine year old he was before. “i’m not sorry. we were best friends jinyoung. that. ends. now.”

hyun-suk stands before his company, looking at his spectacular building. he had done this all by himself, got so far without anybody’s help. not even jinyoung’s. suddenly, he thought of the present he had got, the one he had never opened.

was that the first time? yes, yes it was. the first time he realized what the emotions were.
and no, they were not hatred. they were attraction. love.
that was why their friendship had to end.

and jinyoung knew it. he had to have.
but did hyun-suk?
