Well I finished it actually cause I never watched the third film... idk how, I just forgot.

But it was really good. Everything i remembered was ok but the things I didn't really surprised me and kept me engaged with the world, so much so that I was constantly going to the LOTR wikia to look stuff up cause of my endless curiosity.
I totally forgot Legolas was even in this trilogy, the fact that he calls Gimli a half-goblin before they even meet is fucking gold.
I also liked that they didn't really explore the "Bilbo goes mad from the ring" storyline cause it would have been annoying. Tho... Thorin going mad was just as bad in a way. It was excepted but hella annoying.
Filli and Killi dying was just... my god I knew someone was gonna die but... they were quite most of the films but Killi had a girlfriend and almost died already so they tricked us real good.
The fight scenes were magnificent and I enjoyed them as always. Too bad my girlfriend didn't lol.

Can't wait for the new TV Show and the Gollum game too.

Honestly if I wasn't such a book-anti I might actually read the books but I honestly want the lore without having to read tons and tons of text everywhere.

As someone who has read all the books and watched all the movies I just need to say that the hobbit movies >>>>>>>>>> the Lotr movies :pandatea:
But the books are better for all of them.

I have to agree. I'll be rewatching LOTR next week so I'll see it for certain then but as far as I remember some of the LOTR characters weren't that likeable in the first place so a marry band of hobbits was just better. I can imagine the books being better but dammit I'm a visual person and even tho I have a great imagination I'd rather see someone elses view of something or should I say his vision than my own which is likely not what they were thinking of.

I might have enjoyed the lord of the rings movies more if they were more like the books ngl but the differences were all bad differences for the trilogy. For the hobbit the movies were nothing like the books which is why I liked it, I wasn’t comparing the two because they were too different.

i love the lotr movies, the fellowship of the ring is probably my favourite movie of all time. not comparing them to the books though since i never read them and probably never will because i'm too lazy for this. i've only seen the hobbit trilogy once, i didn't dislike them as much as many others did but still my favourite thing about it was probably the song played at the end of the 3rd part sung by the guy who played pippin in lotr. the story felt a bit too stretched for me at times, i think there was no need for it to have 3 movies, should have been 2 at most.

Haven't read the books. So my opinion of the LOTR trilogy is that it's so good, and it's one of my fave trilogies.

The Hobbit trilogy is really good too!

Hmmm I'm not sure in a way. They probably could have made it into 2 if they hadn't focused on certain elements but with what they did focus on I honestly could have seen them making 4 instead since there was a lot to explore.

I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, especially the extended dvd edition. I used to re-watch my copies quite a lot considering they're over 10 hrs in total. I nvr counted how long it took as id watch it at weekends n just take it all in. Stopped after the Hobbit trilogy completed. Nvr got into Hobbit book, as i read it later after reading LoTR when i was young.

Interesting is tat from the progressiom we're moving back in time-from LOTR the end of 4th Age to Hobbit the beggining of the end to the earlier than the Hobbit era. Looking forward to it.

i hate the lotr movies with a burning passion wishing a horrid death on all of his family :) Its the perfect encapsulation of current filmmaking. Look and style no substance. Not as bad as eps 7 8 9 which have nothing redeemable about them. At least the balrog looked cool as did Hobbiton, Rivendell. I can take that in a blow stuff up movie, but not one I am that attached to.

For the sake of my heart i refuse to watch return of the king after leaving the theater stunned that some people like the mess that was the two towers.

The problem i have with just awful adaptions is, those become the cannon in peoples heads and thus stories like starship troopers and battle field earth are just running jokes.

At least Chris Columbus laid a solid foundation for HP. Brought the kids and staff to life. With fantastic casting calls. AC was strong in 3 solid call on Lupin and Sirius then later folk skim over the rest as the books were doorstops much too large for 2hours 30 min adaptations.

Honestly, this prolly applies to the PJ series too and I know you hate Percy Jackson with a passion... but there's the scene where percy goes to give the bolt to Zeus. Him [Percy] and Poseidon have like a minute alone together and in the book it is completely different than in the movie. Like in the book its really awkward and you really feel bad for Percy and the end of the sequence is redeemable where Poseidon says something like, "Remember you're mine..." But in the film it was totally white washed and they do what hollywood loves and give a grand emotional version of it that is completely different from the source material.

Its like when Magnus meets his father in the spin off series [also a god] he ends up hugging him. So I'm assuming that if Magnus gets a film, which is unlikely, they would make that 10x more extra than it was in the books. But I digress.

Do you think that the lotr movies would be considered good [in your opinion] if you had seen the films prior to reading the books?

yea a 26 year old annabeth kinda kills the whole PJ vibe..... those were not 12/13 year old kids.

No i hate the movie for fundamental flaws in story telling also. Jackson's story telling was awful it just the visuals captured everyone.

like say voices in his head telling Frodo what to do, or Frodo choosing Smeagol over Sam(lol my sister called me up after watching with her kids and asked me if that would ever happen..... i was not well. The joke that is Aragorn the conflicted 90's man unsure about his identity....... the deus ex machina battle of minas tirith. The floating down the river dream seq. the elves showing up at helms deep and saving the humans. Wrong story bro.

lol my friends have advised me to never see return of the king or suffer an aneurysm.

but sometimes the movies can be more fun than the books like say Sahara. Those actually got me to try cussler but dam that man sucks with his ridiculously pacifist main char. MM is much more charming/engaging /fun than his guy.

Harrison ford makes a great jack ryan. that other dude shall not be named.

I kinda am able to sorta compartmentalise films/tv adaptations from their source materials.

For SW OT: Hope, Empire n Jedi i kinda hv begun to sort of put them in 3 different alternate continuities since the whole Luke/Vader/Leia father/sister/brother thing cant be reconciled unless u ignore tat 2 n 3 L/V/L relationships dont mesh. Everything abt the storytelling , i mean we know Lucas, Brackett n Kasdan were making up the whole Skywalker family from movie to movie, but the excitement abt SW made most of us overlook tat(plus videotape/dvds in 1983 werent much of a thing so no rewatching the whole trilogy to jigsaw everything together until realising Hey yhese pcs from 1 dont fit with 2 n pcs from 2 dont fit with 3; i nvr bothered trying to mesh 1 n 3.[take my nos. As OT1,OT2,OT3 not SW ep4, 5,6-i plain forgot the numbering.

So from there, n from the whole DCEU/CW neta-continuities i hv started to separately think of films/tv adaptations from their source materials (including the Star Wars EU books b4 Disney bought Lucas[films]. I nvr expected the children of Han n Leia or Luke n Mara to be reverse-adapted into SW sequels, but they were fun to read in their time. More Han Solo on Corellia/same goes for SW comics-enjoyed reading em (Marvel's, pre-Dark Horse). Later ones not as engaged, so much until Doctor Aphra maybe.

Tldr: to me LoTR , books n movies are in different headspace. Hey, Tolkien wrote Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Lost Road n an entire Legendarium of different versions of Ea, Turin, Feanor(?) n Illuvatar (its been too many yrs tho, so i cant rmbr any details). N Chris Tolkien assembled the History of LoTR, the different versions/drafts with Bungo/Trotter n idk who else. Then there's Bladorthin/Gandalf/Thorin in the History of the Hobbit, different versions/drafts of Hobbt. Im saying iv separated different headspaces for books/films/tv. I mean even Batman 60s tv show is separate from Burton movies/Gotham tv show n others. Also Smallville tv show n Superboy tv show with like 2/3 different actors as Superboy/Clark. Just my opinion/theory (to keep my head from exploding/i enjoyed watching Fellowship in the cinema in 2001-the cliffhanger when the audience realised it just stopped mid-story, i rmbr being highly amused then-i knew TT was coming(it was stated on the screen i think) but the shock i felt from that audience seemed palpable to, i think i heard murmurs of disbelief/shock then but too long ago to be certain. Sure TT, RK dint give the same shock of seeing Frodo, Gandalf n Strider on the screen but i rewatched the extended dvds at least 2/3 times in past 10 yrs. While i hvnt finished reread of the book (i tried but teading takes longer), life n work n tv n movies n other activities interrupted. I tried to reread AGoT book 1 last year but im stuck on chapter hmm no numbers, maybe a Bran chapter?

As for the question of if i can enjoy a film if i hvnt read the source material first, i think maybe(if i separate the source/adaptation in my headspace. Not sure wat counts tho. I tried to read Twilight/Hunger Games b4 the movies were announced/made, but i think the movies are at least rewatchable whereas i dint read beyond page 1 of Twilight, while i finished HG i retain no memory of most of the 3 books. Divergent movies/books-watched all dint read beyond few/first pgs. Varies with Percy Jackson, Pittacus Lore, Mortal Instruments n so maaaany YA bks/movies of 2000s/2010s, i just hv to mention Golden Compass-wish they'd completed the movie trilogy. Hvnt watched the tv adaptation. Recently a Pratchett Night Watch adapatation came out. I enjoyed it for wat it was, while Pratchett fans on Discworld discord server werent enthused as me. Im more a Moist Van Lipwig fan, n liked Going Postal -all itrations, go figger.

So rand, are you going to watch ur namesake when Wheel of Time adaptation/tv show comes out? Or dont risk discombobulation/heart attack unless/until a trusted person tells you its alright? (Maybe theres a Robert Jordan/WoT discord server u might join, tho im not sure if theres one).

no to WoT. zero faith in Hollywood to tell the story. let alone it will be a tv deal and i no longer watch tv shows aside for Korean ones with my groups in them.

not even sure i will ever watch Sanderson adaptations.

Books are a collab maybe 80/20 (some might put that split as much as 50/50) author /reader its bad enough when they play with the reader 20% but like lotr messed with the 80% and rewrote cannon.

Its even worse wit sci fi.
battlefield earth, starship troopers are awful start to finish. Dune is hit or miss.

i think the only adaptation in the past 2 decades i have liked is enders game.

I am lucky in that i was never as wedded to deep comic lore like my friends who hate x men ect for much of the same reasons i hate lotr.

STar wars lucas is horrid at nuts and bolts but has a big vision. so ep 4-6 worked. 1-3 aside from just awful HC had to deal with his inherent flaws and his ego from 4-6 working so well. PM could have been great as we saw just how crazy kick ass a jedi and a trainee could be.

Iv read some stuff abt making SW OT1, a loooot of credit goes to Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew and Marcia Lucas in film editing as the finished film before she got through with it was a mess improved it from earlier versions.
Also the fx n Gary Kurtz made innumerable input/stuff tat went above n beyond wat was usual in space movies at tat time. George's genius is in the initial/overall story/plot n wrangling everything to get the final film but he needs able/accomplished ppl on his team. Witness after Gary Kurtz left n most of the ppl who worked on SW OT1-3, the difference between Rick Marschall n Doug Chiang vs Kurtz n Trumbull, Johnston et al, is quite telling imo. Too many followers, not as many/none who'd say no to Lucas on PM, AoTC, RotS so overall quality/creative/storytelling were much different. SW 7-9 needed Lucas' wrangling genous imo, or at least ONE person even Abrams in tat role. Kathleen Kennedy's an exec, like Alan Ladd-they needed someone in Lucas' wrangling role.

Iv nvr read Sanderson or more than the first page of WoT. I read almost all Goodkind Sword of Truth but nvr watched the tv adap. Also read all Feist in ebook abt 2-3 yrs bk (only read 1st trilogy, Mara trilogy n Prince of Blood maaany yrs ago. Nvr read Williams completely, started 1st book long ago. Then 2-3 yrs ago restarted/finished Dragonbone chair n cont into bk 2 but interrupted/stopped midway. Cant rmbr where i stopped so hvnt retried again. I would watch any tv/movie adap of most of these. Brooks' Shannara too, tho i only rmbr reading either 1st three or just Sword of Shannara. Hvnt seen the tv adap, no idea how/where to find it even. I love GoT tv show, even the final 8th season. I got affected by the reactions to it such tat it brought down my enjoyment but i loved it while watching, every little bit.

To me, its not just the director/person in charge but the whole team tat equals whether tv/movie adap works, also budget but tats not on the director mostly. Ill watch the 2nd age of Middle Earth tv show when it comes out. N GoT prequel but i hv no expectations from both, since theres not as much source material they're working from.

One thing is i want stories after SW 7-9 (Also after ST Nemesis, tho Picard series is tat). Not sure when/if we'll get any tho. Maybe nu-SW or SW High Republic will get made first, requrgitated/rebooted stories not many asked for, instead of continuing Rey/Finn/Poe's story. Or in 25/30 yrs, Daisy, Boyega n Isaac will return for SW Ep 10-12 n pass the torch to next generation of Force users. Maybe Rey will start/head a new Jedi Order/sth like tat. Tats all for now, rand.
