    So... I saw that Purple Kiss had their worst first week sales to date. :SeungMeance: Part of me wants to share to talk about it, but part of me thinks people will take it snarky. I like the group when they do their witchy concept, but I'm kind of like... this is what happens when you constantly deviate from the sound people like best from you.

    So I'm sharing with someone who I know won't take it snarky.

    virality is very important but it's also important to note whether it is sustainable or not - I mean look at Brave Girls - Rollin' was IT song (if that's a thing) in 2021 but that didn't continue. Look also at 5050 who knows if cupid is a one hit wonder and whether they can continue their success. Hindsight is 20/20. One cannot predict whether a group that's hot now can remain hot forever

    I know on the other side there was a person called wsoet who used a methodology similar to what I was thinking which is a comparison of one's performance relative to others during that year...

    To get around this, my methodology was to first gather the t‍op 100 songs for each year, as reported by G‍aon. Then, I normalised each song's streams/downloads/points relative to the mean value achieved by those same 100 songs for that year. For example, if a song had 1.5 million downloads in 2010, and the average song in the t‍op 100 had 1 million downloads, I would assign a value of 150% (= 1.5 million ÷ 1 million) to that song.

    I repeated this calculation for every song's streams/downloads/points. For songs in the pre-2018 era, I then took the resulting streaming and download percentages for each song in the combined year-end Digital Chart and averaged them to get a value that could be used to compare to post-2018 songs, which just have a digital score. My final step was to add up all the percentages for every song across every year.

    This process of normalising song performance to the mean (average) therefore attempts to balance out the effect of decreasing downloads, increasing streams, and decreasing digital points over time. Thus, without further ado, the 50 most successful songs according to G‍aon annual data are shown in the table below "

    and if one is to compare soloists comparison just note for example a soloist doesn't share in the spoils of war with anybody other than themselves whereas groups like twice only get 1/9 of the profit lol

    That's fair! There are definitely a lot of factors. Like I think a more competent company could have leveraged Brave Girls unexpected viral hit into better success (ala EXID), but I also think Brave Girls never had bad music, just bad management. Especially since other groups at that time could take the same style of song (such as AOA) and did much better.

    It makes me wonder for his new group, Candy Shop, but I guess time will tell. I'm curious to see what FIFTY FIFTY manages with their new lineup, because they seemed to have a competent company, such as getting that Barbie single that was going to have an MV, but the group's success got derailed for other reasons.

    Ah, I miss wsoet's analyses! I don't have the mathematics for trying to do it myself, but it's cool to see when people can take a bunch of results and turn into something comparable.

    The point about soloists is good too... It's also probably cheaper for the company -- one person to outfit, not nine -- so they probably don't mind not having IU sales. Or more like... IU level sales aren't required for an individual soloist to seem worth it.

    Speaking of soloists... what's your take on this whole Lucas getting a solo before a good chunk of NCT? :pepesmug: As someone who knows NCT but isn't one of their fans, the whole thing is weird to me. SM's dropped other artists for smaller scandals, and he doesn't seem to be one of their stand-outs in terms of rap, vocal, or dance, so I don't see the appeal from that angle either.

    but that's the ultimate question though for all kpop companies - how to make something that went viral continue and leverage that success...
    I'm pretty sure every company wants to do it but can they? lol

    same thing for cfs and concerts and other things - you don't share in the profits with anything other than yourself

    I think it was part of his contract/deal that he made with SM in order to remain in SM - like he got kicked out of SuperM and NCT but not from SM so there's probably a lot more going on behind closed doors
