News BTS Won’t Submit for 2027 Grammy Awards Consideration (1 Viewer)

BTS will not submit its music for consideration at the 69th Grammy Awards, scheduled for Feb. 7, 2027, the group announced on Wednesday.

All seven members – RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook – posted the same statement on their individual instagram accounts.

“We have decided not to submit for Grammy consideration this year. We hope our music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language. We thank Army and everyone who has always stood by us.”

The announcement lands just over a month after the Recording Academy unveiled a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. “This category recognizes artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognized within Asian markets, including but not limited to K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, with meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. Awards are presented to the performing artist(s),” the Academy’s description of the category reads.

BTS has been nominated for Grammys before, including in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video categories, but has never won. All seven members have been voting members of the Recording Academy since 2019.

Expectations for a first BTS win had been running high heading into next year’s ceremony. The group released its fifth studio album, “Arirang,” in March following the completion of the members’ mandatory military service, and the record topped Billboard’s main singles and albums charts, generating significant global response.

well, on one hand, I'm glad they didn't submit. give other artists their time to shine. but otoh, they really denied themselves the biggest award in music??? wyd??? so yeah, I have mixed feelings about it

Given their response, it's possible they're not submitting in defiance of the new category. They don't want to be relegated to a regional category when other artists can compete almost everywhere else in terms of nominations. That's my interpretation, at least

As someone who knows very little about the Grammys, I’m a little confused how it works. Does the addition of an Asian category exclude Asian artists from getting any other award? I always assumed it was like Kpop end of the year awards, where there are main categories (daesangs), and smaller awards, but everyone is eligible for everything they are eligible for (ex. Big Bang couldn’t win best girl group song, but they could win best boy group song, artist of the year, song of the year, etc). But the reactions make it seem like I’m wrong about that.

I was actually really annoyed at the Grammys for that BTS should be allowed to still be part of album of the year and what not

More exactly, they say BTS leads the global charts and are #1, because they sold over 4.7 million copies worldwide. The album is the #1 pure physical and vinyl seller in the US market, too. I assume BTS got some inside informations about that the new category is made specifically for them to win in this year, but they can't win Album Of The Year, no matter what. That's why they decided to stay away from the whole show. Which must be a difficult decision, because some members' dream was to win a Grammy award.
Sidenote is that BTS were invited for American award shows for years, been nominated in some categories for years, without giving them an actual bigger award. It always felt like they were invited just for show and clickbait. And I don't say this because I'm their fan, I try to look at this objectively.

This. How an African or Asian artist’s song can’t be “just” pop music? Instead, it’s African or Asian pop music. But when the artist is an US citizen or others that you mentioned, it’s simple pop music. Why are they not labelled as American, British or Canadian pop music?
These award shows (all around the world, if we look at it) with dozen of categories are joke, because ofc, after all, they want to give the main prizes to local artists, that’s the point. Other categories often feel like consolation prizes.
Recognizing artists and music all around the world is good, but deciding on what is pop pop/pop music and box other artists into predefined labels is not fair. Music has no boundaries.
