Are you sure it was the Aztecs? I thought it dates to at least 500 BCE with the Mayans, which predates the Aztecs by a lot.
It was both the Aztecs and the mayas but the way the western world discovered it was through the Aztecs drink

Oh ofc they both drank it yeah, I just meant the Aztecs weren’t the first to have the drink, just more known because of the conquests. Either way their drinks predate typical western hot chocolate though. But I have to say I don’t think most people would prefer the older versions, me included. I prefer a medium one that includes milk and some sugar.

Oh yeah ofc

i mentioned the mayas as doing it before hot chocolate was invented in my second post in the thread I think

I’m sure most ppl wouldnt for sure:haylul: unless they grew up with it

i expected it to be one of your history threads, like did you know actually this was the first “hot” chocolate drink and say the maya one or say hot chocolate was inspired by this chocolate drink with chilies and say the Aztec one or smth like that

but it was one of your cooking threads

The one I found with it was from my Mexican cookbook, I think it was historically popular in some of that area? Like the original/one of the original versions of hot chocolate included chili I believe. It probably got omitted later on when the Europeans arrived and were introduced to cocoa plants. As to it's popularly now I'm not sure which areas often drink it that way, I'd imagine it's around in some parts of Mexico if it's in that cookbook but I don't know how many parts of Mexico.
They really put the hot in hot chocolate then lmao That's interesting though I always thought it was european, the more I learn!!

Indeed, hot like spicy and hot like temperature all in one :lisalaugh: And nah, cocoa beans themselves are native the the Amazon rainforest, Europeans weren't able to reach them/the Americas for ages, by that point people had developed their cocoa bean stuff for hundreds of years. The more common version nowadays, with added milk and sugar, was the Europeans doing though. I think they had generally the same idea of spiciness in chili powder as many people do now. That being said, the Europeans addition of sugar and dairy is noticeable in the chili hot chocolate I made even, so that part which is attributed to Europeans being everywhere definitely shows they made a mark related to hot chocolate even if not being the first to cultivate it.

IT'S ALWAYS THOSE DAMN EUROPEANS!!!!!

I understand why people put it in now. Usually with food choices I go "you do you" but putting in chilli is like keeping the og alive so even though I persoanlly wouldn't I think I'm gonna my vote to a yay
