Honestly.... so far GGs have been DOMINATING the 4th gen

ITZY, Aespa, StayC, IVE have all been talked about a lot! Not to mention the many GGs that have hype behind them that are yet to even debut like JYPn, Source Music's GG, HYBE's GG (From the new company ADOR), KEP1ER
For boygroups there is ATEEZ, Enhypen, TXT and Stray Kids aaand.... that is about it? There isn't even any pre-debut groups that have been hyped a lot!
+ both Ateez and SKZ have more of an international fandom and their presence in Korea isn't that strong (Which I mean they are fucking great, but still)

*cough* Not to be annoying and biased but The Boyz, despite not having a huge international fandom, are quite big and getting even bigger day by day. In 2021, they were ranked top 5 most popular BG (all gens included) in SK. They're huge in South Korea and they are often trending on the Korean side of Twitter.

SKZ is 2018 and even they are BARELY 4th in my eyes

I feel like the 2017 groups are a sort of 3.5 gen, like how 2011/2012 is sometimes considered 2.5 because they were late to the 2nd gen party, but still had a 2nd gen sound and style to them (also a lot of successful groups debuted then, so they’re almost in their own little bubble)

The likes of The Boyz and ONF feel too late for 3rd gen, but also too early to be called an outright 4th group. It’s confusing sometimes

Since they debuted really at the end of 2017, they are considered 4th gen. They are just an exception. They aren't 3rd gen. Everywhere you search, the officials (Broadcasts, tvshows, radios, companies, whatever you get it) call them 4th gen. They are the very early birds of 4th gen lol sprouts

I personally wouldn't consider anyone debuted before 2019 4th gen because that's when groups like itzy and txt actually started becoming popular enough to start a new generation. With 2018 and before there wasn't enough popularity, impact or distinction, to start a new generation. And 2019 debuts is when the media started calling groups like itzy and txt 4th gen because of their impact

Yeah I stan a lot of the 2011/2012 groups, and Stray Kids didn’t look out of place with the other third gen groups who were on Kingdom.

ONF debuted 2nd August 2017, so it feels like they’re kinda out there on their own.

I think the new gen is also being decided on how quickly Kpop has been growing worldwide. I remember when EXO’s Overdose was one of first few Kpop mvs to hit 100m, and even 1m views for a first day release was a huge achievement that was celebrated. Now it feels like the fans that have joined the Kpop community in the past two to three years have their own generation.
