Why Have We Become More Obsessed With Place Rather Than Music, Today? (1 Viewer)

I wasn't sure if I should put this in the Kpop section or the General section because this doesn't just apply to Kpop fans, it applies to fandom culture in general. I mean rarely do we ever discuss the music anymore. It's always about sales and placing. Even second place is not good enough for people anymore. Where do you think this mentality stems from?

I've been really frustrated going on twitter with the amount of "decline" and "they are done" talks I've seen about GFriend. I literally just deactivated my account because it was legit bothering me and the most frustrating part is, I don't why it bothers me. Like, I LOVED Fever and really adored the music yet I am frustrated that it's not performing well on the charts. Why can't I be content that we got good music? :(​

I feel like it has a lot to do with FOBO as well. Bandwagon stans are increasing rapidly, and the toxic culture that surrounds it is becoming a significant part of KPOP. Because of bandwagon stans stanning for popularity, in order for people to support a group, people bring up sales, views, etc. to hype up their faves, rather than the quality of the music. And as people don't want to be "left out" of stanning a group, they'll just go with the general audience's opinion.

I think there isn't much history behind where it comes from, people just actually felt offended when their favorite artists wouldn't be like the #1, I mean generally speaking, even Nicki Minaj said in an interview with Ellen that a guy pushed her from #1 and she wanted to punch him in the face for it (if she said it jokingly or not, it pushes fans to say and feel the same things). I mean I would lie if I said I don't care if A.C.E doesn't reach #1 at all, it'd be awesome of course and I'll be sad if they really never do get to a higher place than they are right now.
But with that reasoning, most people who are obsessed with placing and sales etc. take it a step further and put others down to make them feel superior, which is just a shame.

That's why I started to listen to more GGs as well, I was a full blown BG stan back when I started listening to Kpop but after a time I noticed that it doesn't really matter and that I should just enjoy music when it comes out, if I don't like it, I don't like it, no need for me to flame and bash the artist/group for it, if I end up liking the music then that's great cuz I found more bops.

I should just enjoy music when it comes out, if I don't like it, I don't like it, no need for me to flame and bash the artist/group for it, if I end up liking the music then that's great cuz I found more bops.

Same reason people who were bullied bully ig. To fit in, or appear "better" because their groups are more successful. And I agree, in terms of this, our race is not doing the best lmao.

I understand what you mean. I think it's because we want our faves to do well. When we support an artist, we don't only support their music, we support their whole career.

I want a 1st win for so many groups that I think deserve it because I love the quality of the music they produce. I instantly get sad if it didn't do well on the charts because I think their music deserves to be more known and the idols also deserve that happiness. I would get equally upset when I hear that my faves are on a 'decline' as well because I want them to continue doing well.

However, I do get upset when all people talk about are sales and not the music at all. I hope people remember that sales aren't everything.

Real talk, though. #1 means validation in K-Pop world. Get a #1 song and your value quintuples.

Not to mention, it's a huge bragging right. There are many songs that deserve #1 but never got one. That doesn't mean I value them less. It's the general public that values them less.

With the rise in social media, if you’re seen as somebody who likes the current trend, people are going to like you too and click follow.

Personally the groups I follow are completely varied in terms of both popularity and music. I love each group for what they bring to kpop. Now I have three groups who have multiple members in the military, I’m still going to stick by them whilst the bandwagon lot probably won’t.

Unfortunately I can't answer your question very well, but I believe it has to do with bandwagoning and fans having bragging rights that they're stanning the most popular artist. I find it incredibly shallow, especially when a fan claims that the certain artist at #1 has better quality music than an artist who doesn't sell or chart as well.

That's not to say I don't want my favorite artists to be popular. Of course I want Block B or whatever nugu soloist I like this week to be successful, because they deserve the recognition. However, caring about being #1 all the time is a frustrating mindset and feelings of bitterness toward rival groups is downright silly to me.

Validation of our beliefs is always nice. We want others to believe as we do. Heck it frames the political discourse of the world and in politics unfortunately we have devolved into forcing uniformity of thought... I often wonder how so many do not see this as the evil/danger it is.

Also i am frustrated that music i see as dreck gets so much love. The past years have taught me how much I hate style over substance.

I have a slight advantage in loving Red Velvet too. I love what they are doing. (while rbb and i do not connect lyrically i can appreciate what they tried to do). I actually thought the same thing about many of the songs I love from multiple folks.

Zim is a perfect example its fun and different from music i tend to want from kpop (more a party song than a listening song.) I remember looking at the charting and think bummer.. and then remembering how happy i would have been to see the charting numbers of the first few hours on other songs that did not chart well early. How spoiled i had become and ungrateful.

Love Whisper is another i really really like yet most still do not, nor did it chart/win like Navi for example.
Fever while i like it is bottom half of gf songs, similar to zim.

At the end of the day people are different and complicated. What most want out of music and kpop is not what i want, and things that i never want are wanted by many.

Do their opinions affect my enjoyment of Red Velvet's music or the other content that they release? Nope!
