Twice recently peformes their first New Jersey concert last night . One of these attendance was a nj.com “NJ Advance Media” , through out the article he continues to critique the concert with more negativity then positive .

He starts the article with a mention of BTS accomplishments in the US , applying that
“not the case for every commercial juggernaut that conquers Korean charts”.

After a quick mention of Twice’s accomplishments (3-4 accomplishments , not including their success in Japan or sales in albums) . He goes ahead and slams twice from there dancing , singing ,etc . Here are a few quotes from the article .

“... performance was light on passion, or any exceeding talent that would warrant 2.5 billion views on YouTube.”

“As the deafening set rolled on, it became apparent that only two or three of women — the group’s most outgoing member, Nayeon; the group’s official “leader” and consummate belter, Jihyo; and sometimes Jeongyeon — could actually hold a tune when not supported by the backing track that blared from the PA. The rest of the group just passively lip-synced along,”

“...Beyond the group’s lead dancer, Momo — who, to her credit, was nearly flawless — it was obvious none of the other women were natural dancers...One could almost feel them counting “ five-six-seven-eight.””

“...urged the crowd to scream and incessantly asked if the audience liked the song they just sang”

The critic then tries to re-consult the reading adding

“Perhaps it’s a cultural difference, the women being naturally more reserved, or instructed to exude a sort of glazed-over pageant poise at all moments. Whatever the case, this group felt animatronic.”

However his last statement would struck a nerve in a lot of Onces

“TWICE...the band is supposed to charm fans through both its music and visuals.

Both need work.”

I think this is what made me most upset.

As someone who stans Twice, I know they need a lot of work but they're improving and trying their best. I feel like the slander is too much and it's been exaggerated for the sake of the article though...

However, I get upset when people bash visuals. You can find someone personally unattractive but hating on someone's face has always made me upset. The fact that they writer says the word 'work' almost suggests that the members need plastic surgery to make their faces better. I don't understand how someone deems themselves worthy enough to call someone unattractive or average to everyone when it is a matter of opinion and morality. You wouldn't tell your coworker or friend that they're ugly or average looking so why can you say the same to idols who are also humans?

I’m wasn’t sure if he did mean their looks are stage presence . Hopefully we can get a explanation ...

Wow, what a dick

I honestly think he went onto some hate sites to write that article from.
Because that's more reminiscent of a toxic forum user than an actual journalist.

This really feels like a bait for attention.
Piss off kpop fans and possibly get more clicks on their website

Either way, he's garbage

This pretty much sums up why TWICE cannot succeed in the west.
I understand why the critic said what wrote , but he attacks every single part of Twice “...Music and Visually... they need to work on both” you don’t think that’s to harsh? .

And for a critic , who knows nothing about Kpop, to write such a review is disappointing. In journalism you’re supposed to look at all angles . He however only focus on the negativity. Yes Twice isn’t a spectacular group , but all 15,000 Onces in that venue had and amazing time seeing one of their favorite groups . Did the critic mentioned that once, Nope.

What I think is that the journalist was underwhelmed by what he got. He expected impeccable dance, extraordinary vocals, stage presence to blow him away since they really do have billions of views. Yet he got mediocre performance.

From what i've gained they just wanted clicks. They mentioned and praised BTS for some reason and so both once and army's (who are smart) are saying it was just to get traction to their site

I understand that Twice's music isn't something that a lot of westerners would like, but at the same time, he needs to realize that these girls are still one of the biggest girl groups in Asia. It's a cultural thing. In Korea, for example, they love cute songs and dances, whereas in the U.S. not everyone likes cutesy songs. I don't think this guy has done much research on them either and doesn't really know how successful and hardworking these girls actually are.

Yeah that makes the most sense to me. Especially by mentioning BTS in the first line of the article, it seems like he just wants to start controversy.

:welp: people wish they could flop like Twice.
I really think that someone didn't do their research and probably hasn't checked out one son before going to the concert

I actually have some mixed feelings about kpop at times, so I actually can relate to article a bit for example I hate lipsynching and lack of artistry that kpop sometimes has. I don't agree with all the things mentioned ofc, and I haven't really checked out Twice's performances on their own concerts so that's probably my view in general than about Twice's concert in particular.

I think the article is okay, he's overexaggerating things but i think that's quite common in criticism articles cause they need to make it enjoyable to read, I mean without colorful expressions to way or other it would quite boring. I hope he doesn't get too much hate over it, cause should be allowed to post article like this and although he is bit ignorant about kpop (which he states also himself in the end) he makes some good points and also gives a bit credit where it's due so it's not hate article. Kpop fans just get overprotective at times. Not talking about those disagreeing with article or stating their points about it in calm manner, either to other kpop fans or to guy who wrote the article, but rather to kpop fans that get upset over such things and demand for article to be taken down, apologies and/or person to be fired- if there is such fans.

Yeah I certainly don't think the article should be taken down or anything. I do think the article was really lacking for a journalistic article though. Yes, he is ignorant of kpop and not trying to hide it, and certainly allowed to state his opinions. But if he is ignorant of the subject matter, I question the purpose and rationality behind making a judgemental review about the matter.
It would've been fine if he wrote it as a report, and mentioned what he liked or didn't like and maybe mentioned some curiosities he found. What we got was a review without any insightful analysis, with a really passive-aggressive tone throughout. Especially the line "Yes, ladies, the building is literally shaking with shrieks. You’re fine."

And maybe this is just the standard with journalist reviews, but at no point does he state it's his opinion. He doesn't state them as if it's from his point of view either, or even criticizing the performance. Notice that in his language he always criticizes the girls and not the performance. For example instead of pointing out what he didn't like about the dancing, he'll say they are not natural dancers or having any exceeding talent. Every statement is very matter of fact, stated as if it was true. Overall, I didn't find many positives in the article and I'm not fond of people who make quick judgements.
