So, because I like, 'Kill This Love', I decided to make this thread in hopes of explaining (Hopefully) the music video behind the song.
So, the song in it's entirety is about a relationship which is toxic (Possibly for both sides) and needs to be ended. There's a sense of self-awareness about the mistakes of entering a toxic relationship, a struggle of trying to resist it, there's even some religious symbolism in the song and MV itself. I think one of the easiest things to spot is the difference between the rappers and the singers, the singers (Rose and Jisoo) end up killing themselves whereas the rappers (Jennie and Lisa) don't. I think that this meant to represent the battle between the heart and the mind, with the vocalists being mind and the rappers being the heart. I will try to explain the members' scenes separately, hopefully it will make sense the most that way.
Rose
So, the first scene is the car scene, in which she is seen speeding down the road. However this isn't a normal car scene, as everything around the car is dark, you can't really see what is around Rose and her car.
This could've been intentionally done to make the scene look more closed off, as Rose is actually speeding to hit herself, representing the battle of her overcoming her emotions and thinking logically, which is why she and Jisoo are the mind battling against the heart. This is further emphasised through the lyrics and supported by the way that Rose is presented:
'What should I do,
I can't stand myself being so weak
While I force myself to cover my eyes
I need to bring an end to this love'
In the lyrics, Rose is contemplating her options, as if feeling lost, she doesn't want to feel weak and even implies that she tries to ignore the problems with the relationship, but she is aware that this isn't healthy and she needs to close it all off. In the first few seconds, we're shown a Rose running away from the car:
There are two Roses in this scene, the one singing the lyrics (Who is questioning herself) is driving the car whereas the one running away doesn't sing. It can be assumed that the Rose running away is her emotions for the guy, whereas the driving Rose is the mind slowly overcoming her feelings. We actually see the running Rose look back at the car, stop running, turn back to the camera (Which can be assumed to be the place that she was running to which was the love for the guy) and then fully turn to the car again. Her fully turning to the car symbolises her feelings coming to term that she can't be with the guy and finally making the decision to cut off the relationship.
The car's plate also says, 'ego' on it. Normally, Egos are associated with confidence and self-centredness. Rose driving the car and trying to hit herself with it could signify her gaining the confidence to finally end the relationship, and to be selfish enough to focus on herself instead of staying with the guy.
Then the next time that we see Rose, she's no longer crying, her expression doesn't reveal much as it appears unemotional. She's simply holding a four leafed clover, with her starting really close to the camera and gradually getting further away as there's a storm behind her. There's also a change of tone in Rose's lyrics. Previously, she was questioning herself and displaying a clear conflict of emotions, whereas now, she seems confident and even sarcastic towards the guy.
'Lucky me
Lucky you
After all, in the end, we lie
So what, so what
If I end up forgetting you
So sorry
I'm not sorry'
Rose admits to one of the flaws of the relationship, 'we lie', they were dishonest with each other, however she is ready to move on. She's holding a four leafed clover and this could easily be interpreted in two ways. 1. The four leafed clover is meant to be ironic, they represent luck however their relationship was toxic and had to end, which isn't necessarily so lucky, which is why the lyrics 'Lucky me, Lucky you' have a hint of sarcasm. 2. The four leafed clover isn't ironic, the luck comes from Rose being able to be aware about the flaws of the relationship and gaining confidence to break it off.
In this scene, we also see Rose running away, laughing and then finally turning back to the camera. Unlike her first scene, where she was looking confused and lost, she smiles this time whilst holding onto the clover and her arm. Her holding onto her own arm symbolises her not having to be held or protected by the guy and that she's confident in being alone, hence why her body gestures appear as closed off. The wind and the storm is also pushing at her, but this is meant to represent her letting go of him and the relationship, sacrificing what was once part of her which is why she is able to smile.
Jisoo
So, the second vocalist. Unlike Rose, where the contemplating and killing of oneself came in the first scene, we don't get that with Jisoo at the start. (It can be noted that Jisoo's first scene is shown before Rose's). Much like Rose, Jisoo is at a conflict with her emotions, with an abundance of feelings and questions. Whilst Jisoo seems confused with what she is saying, none of that is displayed in her expressions.
'Look at me
Look at you
Who will be in more pain?
You smart, like who?
You are
If you cry tears of blood from both eyes
So sorry, like who?
You are'
There's an indication that Jisoo is contemplating breaking up with the guy, however she shows signs of feeling trapped with the guy being in control. She is starting to point out their relationship and realise the flaws of it, emphasised by the, 'Look at me, look at you' as if to allude that they've both changed since entering the relationship. This theme of self-reflection could also be symbolised by her reflection being shown. However, she can't fully accept the truth yet and this is implied by her back being turned to the sun as usually, 'seeing the light' is something like, 'seeing the truth'. She choosing to not fully accept the truth of the relationship and that is that they're both toxic for each other.
Then, Jisoo has a headpiece which seems to wrap around her head and neck. Unlike before, this presents the possibility of Jisoo being trapped in the relationship, as the headpiece wraps around her head, so she acknowledges the nature of the relationship, but she can't fully garner the courage to break it off. So on the surface, we're lead to believe that Jisoo is making the choice to not accept the truth by being turned away from it even though she can see it, however, we're explained that she feels trapped, and she's slowly gaining the confidence to escape her trap (Which is why a part of her head is exposed)
Then, in the next scene, it mirrors somewhat Rose's first scene. In this one, we have two Jisoos, one running away and one chasing the runner. Though in this scene, Jisoo is walking backwards, still refusing to accept the truth, she seems too troubled to do so as she shakes her head and even has a hand on her chest as if to show that it's hurting.
Interestingly enough, the Jisoo that is running, is the one that is singing the lyrics and the lyrics are pretty much the same as Rose's in her first scene, except the third line. Rose's third line said, 'While I force myself to cover my eyes' whereas Jisoo's line is, 'While i force myself to hide my tears' which shows that Rose didn't see the refused to see the flaws in her relationship whereas Jisoo saw the flaws, but had to pretend that everything was okay because she was trapped.
'What should I do,
I can't stand myself being so weak
While I force myself to hide my tears
I need to bring an end to this love'
Then, we're shown the second Jisoo approaching, unlike Rose's scenes, where it was a car so the realisation was very quick, this Jisoo (Who is an archer) approaches slowly, why? Well, the running Jisoo finally turns her back and runs, but she doesn't get very far. Why? Because as previously stated, Jisoo was already aware of the flaws of her relationship, she knew that it was toxic and she wasn't trying to hide it. However, she was trapped in her relationship for whatever reason, she couldn't escape it which is why she couldn't turn to the light which was the truth. So unlike Rose, who simply broke the relationship off, Jisoo was trying to free herself from it which is why the archer isn't rushing as it's not something that can be done quickly.
There's also a possibility of some irony being used with Jisoo. Originally in her first scene, Jisoo had her back turned to the light and was immobile to emphasise her feelings of being trapped, however, the moment that she turns to the light, it's behind a glass and leaves her trapped again. This is to symbolise that she can't just accept the truth, she has to leave the relationship now. Which is why the Archer wasn't rushing after the running Jisoo, the end of the relationship was inevitable once Jisoo turned her to the light, which is why she turns again, this time to face the Archer.
Again, this could be pure irony on two levels. 1. Jisoo being an archer could be a nod towards Cupid and his arrows. Jisoo is trying to leave the relationship and she is being shot with an arrow as a way to escape, unlike Cupid, where his arrows made people fall in love. 2. The arrow is on fire, emitting light as the castle (Or the place) is actually very dark. This goes back to Jisoo having her back to the light earlier, and how she is now having to accept the light (truth) and there's no going back. On top of this, the Archer is wearing a headpiece of jewels. Unlike the first headpiece which could've represented the sense of being trapped, this one symbolises protection, Jisoo is set on breaking free of the relationship and by wearing the headpiece, it acts as a shield to protect her from manipulation or doubts.
When we see the running Jisoo, there's a hint of a smirk now. This could imply that she is finally letting go of the relationship and moving on. As up until that point, she seemed conflicted and troubled.
Jennie
So, unlike the vocalists, who all represent the mind and getting over the relationship, the rappers are already aware of toxicity but they can't let go. They love it too much, as if it were a drug. They know that they should let go but they simply can't. Jennie doesn't like the pain that she has to experience from the love, and she's aware that this time, it will also end badly, but she is a slave to her feelings, and she can't stop loving him despite the toxicity.
'After a sweet Hi
there's always a bitter Bye
After every crazy High
there's a Price you have to pay
There's no answer to this Test
I'll always fall for it, Yes
I'm a slave to my emotions
Screw this heartless love'
Again, there's the symbolism of light, in this scene, Jennie never turns around, which reinforces that idea that she's refusing to move on, as she knows the truth. She can easily escape, but it's her choice not to. The clouds in the sky could represent how she is clouded by her emotions, you can still see the sun which means that she's aware of the truth but just refuses to do anything about it.The use of the swans is also a reference to how Swans are the type of animals that once they find a mate, they will remain with that mate until death, and if one dies, then there's a possibility for the other swan to die from sadness too. It can also be seen as ironic that the swans are black and white, possibly a reference to ying yang and having the perfect balance, yet Jennie is singing about how it's toxic.
Jennie is then seen holding a two-piece heart, one half is red and the other is black. The black could represent the toxicity of the relationship or even the guy himself, and the red representing herself, as she pulls the two pieces away from each other. This again, emphasises the idea that it's the heart that is refusing to let go, and the way to end it, is by killing the love essentially.
Lisa
The other rapper, Lisa, enters the her scene fiercely, she displays full confidence in herself. She enters a room called Heaven, with a bunch of boxes (of cereal?) that have some form of love on them, she's wrecking the place. Lisa explicitly says that the toxicity of the relationship is obvious, it's not good for her however she asks for more. It's as if she is intoxicated, much like Jennie. There's a constant reference to excitement which could be a reference to adrenalin and the pumping of the heart from a rush. Even though the love is bad, she's excited by it which is why she wants more of it.
'Here I come,
kick in the door,
Give me the strongest one
So obvious, that love
Give me more, give me some more
Cling onto the edge of the cliff if you want
With just one word, you're like starstruck again
That warm nervous feeling, extreme excitement
Felt like heaven but you might not get in it'
This is one of the few scenes which has a reference to religion. Heaven is associated as a place where good people go, it's also generally seen as a happy and peaceful place, however Lisa kicks her way in. This could symbolise that she actually isn't going to get her 'heaven' from the relationship because she wasn't invited, she intruded in. This idea of her not being invited into the heaven is reinforced by the lyric, 'you might not get in it', so whilst the relationship may feel like it's good, it actually isn't good. Also, her forcing her way into Heaven could be a representation of how emotions kick in, and it's almost uncontrollable, it just happens and you can't really prevent it.
Jennie + Lisa
This is another explicit reference to religion, where they feel as if they have sinned, instead of choosing the mind and being logical, they chose the heart and made mistakes where they can't get into their heaven. These inferences of religion, feeling like a sinner, not passing a test, entering heaven, it could all also be a nod towards the story of Adam and Eve, they both knew not to eat from the tree of knowledge, yet they went with their heart and chose to eat the fruit, which made them sinners, and here, they're both aware of the toxicity of the relationship, yet they go for it anyway.
'Feelin' like a sinner
It's so fire with him, I go boo hoo
He said you look crazy
Thank you Baby
I owe it all to you
Got me all messed up
His love is my favourite
but you plus me sadly, can be dangerous'
There's also a significance of body posture, in the scene, they seem a little closed off, Lisa's jacket even covering her top a lot of the times. This is meant to represent the fight between the mind and the heart, with the mind temporarily taking over, however this is shortly stopped as they do a dance which involves pushing out and in the chest, symbolising the beating of the heart, which leaves them exposed to their emotions for the guy.
Other Scenes
The scene of the girls dancing in the trap is also symbolic in itself. This continues the general theme of them being trapped in a battle between the heart and the mind, and that they can't escape from the relationship. However, it can be interpreted differently, as the trap is actually open, so it hasn't been set off, this could imply that they feel trapped in the relationship and that there's no escape, however they can easily still escape from it. The red lighting is also meant to represent danger and love, it's meant to show that the love itself is dangerous and that it's a trap in which they will be unhappy in.
Rose leading in the front in this scene is meant to show that the mind has finally won, the hear has lost the battle and let go of the feelings that they had for the guy. This can be seen emphasised through the colours being used in the lighting, for the vocalists, they had colder undertones generally whereas the rappers had warmer undertones to represent their respective stances. However, in this scene, the undertone is more on the cooler side to remind everyone that the mind has won and they're finally over the love. This confidence in their decisions can also be seen from the clothes, they're more 'badass' and less delicate like the dresses that were worn.
And lastly, they're seen turning their backs to the camera. Unlike previously, where they (mostly the rappers) refused to let go and turn their backs, they all turn their back in union on the guy to exit from the relationship. This is a nod towards the battle being over as well as the relationship as they managed to kill the love.
The battle is also seen from the order of the song.
